Bottom-up, scalable synthesis of anatase nanofilament-based two-dimensional titanium carbo-oxide flakes

Hussein O. Badr et al.

Summary: By using a bottom-up approach, we have successfully converted 10 different materials into two-dimensional flakes with carbon-containing anatase-based layers. These flakes exhibit excellent electrode performance in lithium-ion and lithium-sulfur systems, and also show potential in reducing the viability of cancer cells.

First principles calculation of mechanical, dynamical and thermodynamic properties of MnO2 with four crystal phases

Shenggui Ma et al.

Summary: A spin-polarized DFT + U method was used to study the structural, mechanical, lattice dynamical, and thermodynamic properties of alpha-, beta-, gamma- and delta-MnO2. All four kinds of MnO2 were found to be mechanically and dynamically stable, with alpha- and beta-MnO2 being ductile, and gamma-MnO2 being brittle. The phonon vibrational frequencies were analyzed in detail and compared with experimental values to resolve uncertainties in assignment.

Tuning morphology, composition and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic performance of manganese oxide particles fabricated by γ-radiation induced synthesis

Zhuofeng Li et al.

Summary: A gamma-radiation induced synthesis method is used to fabricate manganese oxide catalysts through both reduction and oxidation routes. The catalysts prepared via radiolytic oxidation show high catalytic activity for the complete four-electron reaction pathway of the oxygen reduction reaction, while those synthesized via radiolytic reduction favour the incomplete two-electron reaction pathway. The high catalytic activity of the manganese oxide synthesized via the oxidation route can be attributed to high electrochemical surface area and increased amount of Mn3+ on the surface.

Effects of interlayer confinement and hydration on capacitive charge storage in birnessite

Shelby Boyd et al.

Summary: Nanostructured birnessite demonstrates high specific capacitance and ideal capacitive behavior in aqueous electrolytes, making it a promising electrode material for low-cost, high-power energy storage devices. Capacitive charge storage in birnessite is governed by interlayer cation intercalation, facilitated by the presence of nanoconfined interlayer structural water mediating interactions between the intercalated cation and the birnessite host, resulting in minimal structural changes.

Adjusting the Coordination Environment of Mn Enhances Supercapacitor Performance of MnO2

Anqi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reports the engineering of the coordination environment of Mn atoms in manganese dioxides (MnO2) using a triethanolamine (TEA) complex-induced method, resulting in an optimized Mn coordination environment with oxygen deficiency. The MnO2-TEA sample exhibits high conductivity and excellent ion diffusion capacity, with a remarkable specific capacitance of 417.5 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1), showing the effectiveness of adjusting the coordination environment of metal atoms in metal oxides.

MXene-manganese oxides aqueous asymmetric supercapacitors with high mass loadings, high cell voltages and slow self-discharge

Wei Zheng et al.

Summary: This study tested an AASC with Ti3C2Tz MXene as the negative electrode and a mixture of manganese oxides as the positive electrode, using a saturated lithium chloride electrolyte. The device demonstrated high energy and power densities, slow self-discharge rates, excellent rate capability, and cycling stability, making it a promising option for environmentally friendly AASCs with commercial mass loadings.
