Chamber investigation of the formation and transformation of secondary organic aerosol in mixtures of biogenic and anthropogenic volatile organic compounds

Aristeidis Voliotis et al.

Summary: A comprehensive investigation was conducted on the formation and transformation of photochemical secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in mixtures of anthropogenic and biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the presence of NOx and inorganic seed particles. The study adjusted the initial concentration of the systems to enable direct comparison, and compared experiments conducted in single-precursor systems and their binary and ternary mixtures. The findings showed different molecular interactions and discussed challenges in interpretation.

Characterisation of the Manchester Aerosol Chamber facility

Yunqi Shao et al.

Summary: This study describes the design and comprehensive characterization of the Manchester Aerosol Chamber (MAC), which is used for investigating multi-phase chemistry and the evolution of aerosol physico-chemical properties. The MAC can simulate real-world emissions and pure VOCs to generate aerosol particles, and it can be transferred to the Manchester Ice Cloud Chamber (MICC) for cloud formation studies.

Summary: This study presents an automated method for non-targeted compositional analysis of environmental matrices, which has been rigorously tested for reliability and reproducibility using authentic standards. The method detected over 9600 compounds from critical pollutant sources in environmental samples, demonstrating its ability for rapid and comprehensive compound detection.

Exploring the composition and volatility of secondary organic aerosols in mixed anthropogenic and biogenic precursor systems

Aristeidis Voliotis et al.

Summary: The study measured the volatility distribution of SOA formed from o-cresol, alpha-pinene, and their mixtures using two independent thermal techniques. Results showed differences in particle volatility influenced by different precursors, with alpha-pinene leading to higher volatility than o-cresol, and the mixture falling in between.

Importance of secondary organic aerosol formation of α-pinene, limonene, and m-cresol comparing day- and nighttime radical chemistry

Anke Mutzel et al.

Summary: The study investigated the oxidation reactions of alpha-pinene, limonene, and m-cresol under different relative humidity conditions and found that the SOA formation potential varied significantly depending on the reaction and humidity levels. Limonene showed a higher SOA yield with NO3 radicals under dry conditions, while m-cresol exhibited unexpectedly high SOA yields with OH radicals, particularly under elevated RH. Alpha-pinene, on the other hand, yielded consistent levels of SOA regardless of RH. Additionally, the chemical composition and markers of SOA were found to differ between the different compounds and reaction conditions.
