Flow-mediated organization of two freely flapping swimmers

Xingjian Lin et al.

Summary: This paper numerically studies the collective performance of two flapping swimmers in two dimensions, finding that two flapping foils can converge to equilibrium distances in both lateral and longitudinal directions. Two stable formations have been observed, with the type depending on the phase difference between the foils and being strongly influenced by flapping frequency and amplitude. The velocity enhancement achieved by two foils in stable formations is considerable compared to a single foil.
