Gaze-Contingent Retinal Speckle Suppression for Perceptually-Matched Foveated Holographic Displays

Praneeth Chakravarthula et al.

Summary: Computer-generated holographic (CGH) displays have great potential but are hindered by speckle noise, which perceptibly affects image quality. This study introduces a method that reduces perceived speckle noise by integrating foveal and peripheral vision characteristics of the Human Visual System (HVS), demonstrating superior perceptual quality on holographic displays.

Towards real-time photorealistic 3D holography with deep neural networks

Liang Shi et al.

Summary: The ability to present three-dimensional scenes with continuous depth sensation has a profound impact on various fields. Computer-generated holography enables high-resolution 3D projection, but existing methods have limitations. We demonstrate a deep-learning-based pipeline for real-time 3D hologram synthesis from a single RGB-depth image. Our memory-efficient CNN runs on consumer-grade GPUs and mobile devices, promising real-time performance in future AR/VR headsets.

Beyond Blur: Real-time Ventral Metamers for Foveated Rendering

David R. Walton et al.

Summary: The study introduces a real-time method to compute ventral metamers for peripheral vision, which offers better quality than existing foveation methods and reduces edge blurring effectively. By using smooth moments of steerable filter responses, a novel statistics type suited for real-time rendering is proposed, eliminating the need for costly optimization processes.

Dynamic Closest Color Warping to Sort and Compare Palettes

Suzi Kim et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a method for evaluating the similarity between color palettes by sorting colors, termed dynamic closest color warping (DCCW). Experimental results demonstrate that DCCW outperforms previous methods in terms of accuracy and computing time, with the effectiveness of the proposed sorting technique validated through a perceptual study.

Opposing effects of selectivity and invariance in peripheral vision

Corey M. Ziemba et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the opposing perceptual implications of the tradeoff between selectivity and invariance in sensory processing through specialized stimuli and two complementary discrimination tasks. The results show that ideal observers improve discrimination performance with stimulus size, while humans show improved family discrimination but worsened sample discrimination.
