Current toxicological insights of ionic liquids on various environmental living forms

Viresh Thamke et al.

Summary: Ionic liquids (ILs) are widely used solvents in various fields, but their potential environmental contamination and toxicological impact have become increasingly important. This review article summarizes the recent toxicological effects of newly synthesized ILs on different organisms, including microbes, vertebrates, and plants, and discusses the development of computational modeling for toxicity testing.

Directional depolymerization of lignin into high added-value chemical with synergistic effect of binary solvents

Zhongzhi Yang et al.

Summary: A one-pot method was used to depolymerize organosolv lignin into high added-value phenolic monomers in a synergistic reaction system with methanol-dimethoxymethane binary solvents and acid catalyst. The optimal conditions for maximum yield of liquid products and phenolic monomers were determined through careful investigation of solvent composition and reaction parameters. The proposed mechanism for lignin depolymerization provides promising prospects for developing effective methods to obtain high added-value phenolic compounds from lignin.

Recent advancements in the ionic liquid mediated lignin valorization for the production of renewable materials and value-added chemicals

Rokesh Radhakrishnan et al.

Summary: Lignin is a plentiful aromatic polymer with low valorization rates due to its complex structure, but Ionic liquids (ILs) have shown promise in enhancing its solubility and aiding in valorization. Improved valorization rates can be achieved by adding chemical or biological catalysts, such as lignin-degrading enzymes (LDEs), in the system. Further research is needed to develop innovative process design, engineering tolerant LDEs, and designing biocompatible ILs to facilitate the commercial viability of ILs-mediated lignin valorization.

1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ionic liquid as simple and efficient catalytic system for the oxidative depolymerization of alkali lignin

Wenbo Li et al.

Summary: The oxidative depolymerization of alkali lignin in the [C(2)C(1)im]OAc system under mild conditions was successful, with the addition of water further improving reaction efficiency. The system allowed for the breakdown of specific inter-unit linkages of lignin, resulting in residual lignin with low molecular weight and narrow polydispersity index. The [C(2)C(1)im]OAc-based system proved to be a simple and efficient catalytic system for lignin oxidative depolymerization.
