Efficient removal of microplastics from wastewater by an electrocoagulation process

Maocai Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal performance, mechanism, and influencing factors of microplastics in wastewater treatment by electrocoagulation (EC). It was found that aluminum anode EC is an effective method to remove microplastics with a removal rate above 80%. The efficiency of microplastic removal by EC is influenced by electrolyte concentration and applied voltage density, with flocculation and charge neutralization occurring simultaneously during the process.

Removal of microplastics and attached heavy metals from secondary effluent of wastewater treatment plant using interpenetrating bipolar plate electrocoagulation

Runyu Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, the mixed pollutants of microplastics and heavy metals were effectively removed from the secondary effluent of a wastewater treatment plant using an interpenetrating bipolar plate electrocoagulation (IBPE) reactor. The experimental process showed high removal efficiency for both heavy metals and microplastics. The optimization of removal efficiency was achieved with specific current density, initial pH, and reaction time. Mathematical models and pseudo-voltammetry curve analysis provided insights into the changes in removal rate over time and the complexation forms of heavy metals and surface groups of microplastics. The results suggested that IBPE could be a valuable clean technology for simultaneously removing microplastics and heavy metals from wastewater.

Removal of polystyrene microplastic spheres by alum-based coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation (CFS) treatment of surface waters

Jinkai Xue et al.

Summary: Microplastics are a complex issue in water systems due to their diverse physical and chemical characteristics. This study investigated the removal of carboxylated polystyrene microspheres in real surface waters, finding that higher alum doses generally led to better removal of smaller microspheres, but no substantial improvement in removal of particles between 3 and 25 μm. Smaller PS microspheres were more effectively removed in both river and lake water sources, with the water source significantly affecting the removal efficiency.

Enhanced removal of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics through polyaluminum chloride coagulation with three typical coagulant aids

Yujian Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of anionic polyacrylamide (PAM), sodium alginate (SA), and activated silicic acid (ASA) in enhancing the removal of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics using poly-aluminum chloride (PAC). The results showed that ASA had the highest removal efficiency at conventional dosage, while PAM achieved the best removal effect at high dosage. The mechanism of coagulation was studied, and increasing the dosage of coagulant aids significantly improved the effect of adsorption and sweep flocculation. Additionally, jar tests demonstrated that the current coagulation systems were highly adaptable.
