Comparative pathogenicity and environmental transmission of recent highly pathogenic avian influenza H5 viruses

Nancy Beerens et al.

Summary: The study found that recent H5 clade 2.3.4.4 viruses were highly pathogenic for chickens, but had varying pathogenicity for different duck species, especially the most recent H5N6-2017 virus. On the other hand, the H5N8-2016 virus was efficiently transmitted to chickens through contaminated water sources.

Emergence and spread of novel H5N8, H5N5 and H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4 highly pathogenic avian influenza in 2020

Nicola S. Lewis et al.

Summary: Analyses of highly pathogenic H5 viruses from poultry outbreaks across a wide Eurasian region since July 2020, including the Russian Federation, Republics of Iraq and Kazakhstan, and recent detections in migratory waterfowl in the Netherlands, revealed a variety of H5Nx subtypes posing a threat to poultry production, food security and veterinary public health.

Viral tropism and detection of clade 2.3.4.4b H5N8 highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses in feathers of ducks and geese

Nicolas Gaide et al.

Summary: Feather samples were found to have higher viral loads than tracheal or cloacal swabs in ducks and geese infected with H5N8 HPAIV, with better detectability of the virus in feathers in the early course of infection. This suggests that feather samples should be included in the toolbox of samples for detection of clade 2.3.4.4b HPAI viruses, at least in ducks and geese.

Inferring within-flock transmission dynamics of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N8 virus in France, 2020

Timothee Vergne et al.

Summary: By analyzing duck mortality data from the index farm using a stochastic epidemic model, key transmission dynamics parameters of highly pathogenic avian influenza were identified, providing insight into the potential infectious threat and emphasizing the importance of early prediction and management in disease outbreaks.
