Full-Length Transcriptome and RNA-Seq Analyses Reveal the Mechanisms Underlying Waterlogging Tolerance in Kiwifruit (Actinidia valvata)

Zhi Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physiological responses and molecular mechanisms of Actinidia valvata roots under waterlogging stress using transcriptome analysis. The results showed that the roots responded to waterlogging stress mainly through carbohydrate and free amino acids metabolism and reactive oxygen species scavenging pathways. Several key genes and transcription factor families were identified as potential regulators of the transcriptional response to waterlogging stress. These findings provide insights into waterlogging tolerance in kiwifruit and pave the way for further studies on interspecific differences and molecular breeding.

Effect of early cane pruning on yield components, grape composition, carbohydrates storage and phenology in Vitis vinifera L. cv. Merlot

Luigi Falginella et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different pruning dates on yield, grape composition, phenology and carbohydrate reserves in Merlot grapes grown in a warm climate area. The findings showed that early pruning did not negatively affect vine productivity or grape composition, while late winter pruning slightly delayed growth and maturity of the grapes.

Morpho-anatomical and microbiological analysis of kiwifruit roots with KVDS symptoms

I. D'Ippolito et al.

Summary: Italy, a major kiwifruit producer, has seen a decline in production due to the spread of kiwifruit vine decline syndrome (KVDS). An experimental trial in an affected orchard revealed the presence of fungi that may be responsible for KVDS. Further investigation is needed to determine their role and contribution to plant death.

Summary: This study aims to examine the motivations behind the purchase intentions of kiwifruits and found that neophobia, consumer attitude, and quality attributes influence behavioral intention. This has important managerial implications for developing new marketing strategies for kiwifruit companies.

Phenotyping Tomato Root Developmental Plasticity in Response to Salinity in Soil Rhizotrons

Jacinto Gandullo et al.

Summary: Plants have various strategies to respond to salt stress, and recent research has focused on root system architecture (RSA) and root plasticity to identify new traits related to salt tolerance. Different tomato cultivars show varying levels of salt tolerance, with high root plasticity observed under salt stress. The emergence of lateral roots at the soil surface, where salt accumulates, is strongly inhibited.

Pathogenicity of Phytopythium chamaehyphon: A New Player in Kiwifruit Vine Decline Syndrome of Actinidia chinensis var. deliciosa 'Hayward' in Italy

F. Savian et al.

Summary: Research has shown that Kiwifruit vine decline syndrome may be caused by an interaction between multiple soil-borne pathogens, mainly oomycetes, and waterlogging. Experiment results demonstrate that P. chamaehyphon is pathogenic to KVDS, raising questions about the role of waterlogging in the etiology of KVDS.

Summary: This study compared the effects of controlled and non-controlled grape withering processes in the production of Amarone wine in the Valpolicella area of Verona, Italy. Differences were found in the secondary metabolites of the dried grapes between the two processes, affecting the organoleptic characteristics of the wine. Wines produced using the non-controlled process were found to be more harmonious, elegant, and balanced in sensory evaluation.
