Dose dependence of susceptibility and transmission for an Argentinean West Nile virus strain in local Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae)

Octavio Giayetto et al.

Summary: The susceptibility to West Nile virus oral infection and transmission in a Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus mosquito population in Argentina was evaluated using a dose-dependent vector competence assay. It was found that the population was susceptible to oral infection, with transmission only detected at higher viral doses, indicating a linear relationship between doses and transmission rates. This suggests that the mosquitoes could acquire WNV infection from local urban birds and transmit the virus.
