FT-IR and synchronous fluorescence two-dimensional correlation spectroscopic analysis on the binding properties of mercury onto humic acids as influenced by pH modification and sulfide addition

Hongwei Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influences of pH and sulfide addition on the molecular structure of Hg2+-DOM complexes and the characteristics of Hg2+ binding to DOM using FTIR and synchronous fluorescence two-dimensional correlation spectroscopic analysis. The results showed that different functional groups in DOM exhibited different responses to Hg2+ binding. The formation of S-HA enhanced the binding ability of Hg2+ to DOM, with protein-like fractions playing a leading role in the binding process.

Sanjeeb Mohapatra et al.

Summary: The review discusses the transmission routes and fate of SARS-CoV-2 in the environment, highlighting the presence of viral RNA in wastewater as a potential early warning for future outbreaks. It emphasizes the need for effective sewage treatment to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in the future.

Enhanced complexation of humic acids: Homogenization of protonated groups in the hybrid ozonation-coagulation process

Shiyi Hu et al.

Summary: This study compared the removal efficiencies of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and UV254 between the hybrid ozonation-coagulation (HOC) and pre-ozonation-coagulation (POC) processes for humic acid (HA) at pH 5. It was found that the HOC process had higher removal efficiencies than the POC process, with pre-ozonation in the POC process increasing the binding sites of HA, while ozone in the HOC process facilitated the formation of Al-13 and increased the charge density of HA binding sites.

Performance evaluation of a dead-end hollowfiber ultrafiltration method for enumeration of somatic and F plus coliphage from recreational waters

Asja Korajkic et al.

Summary: The combination of dead-end hollow fiber ultrafiltration with a single agar layer assay (D-HFUF-SAL) showed good performance in assessing the sanitary quality of recreational waters. However, F+ coliphage recoveries were significantly reduced in marine waters, indicating potential interference with the assay performance. Careful consideration should be given to the choice of spike titer method to avoid underestimation of method percent recovery.

Comparative analysis of rapid concentration methods for the recovery of SARS-CoV-2 and quantification of human enteric viruses and a sewage-associated marker gene in untreated wastewater

Warish Ahmed et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effectiveness of two different concentration methods for various viruses and bacteria in untreated wastewater. Results showed that the Concentrating pipette method was more efficient for recovering SARS-CoV-2, while the adsorption-extraction method yielded higher concentrations of indigenous HAdV 40/41 and Lachno3. No significant differences were found in indigenous EV concentrations between the two methods.

Application of Capsid Integrity (RT-)qPCR to Assessing Occurrence of Intact Viruses in Surface Water and Tap Water in Japan

Vu Duc Canh et al.

Summary: The study applied a new method (SD-CDDP-(RT-)qPCR) to detect viruses in surface water and tap water in the Kanto region of Japan. The results showed that PMMoV was more frequently detected in surface water, while most target viruses were not detected in tap water. SD-CDDP-(RT-)qPCR revealed a higher proportion of intact PMMoV and a lower proportion of intact human pathogenic viruses.

Degradation of dissolved organic matter in effluent of municipal wastewater plant by a combined tidal and subsurface flow constructed wetland

Chunjian Lyu et al.

Summary: A novel constructed wetland system called TF-SSF-CW was tested for advanced treatment of wastewater treatment plant effluent, which showed efficient removal of dissolved organic matter, particularly protein and humic-like components. The study demonstrates the potential of TF-SSF-CW as an effective treatment method for organic matter in WWTP effluent.
