Recent methods for discovering novel bioactive metabolites, specifically antimicrobial agents, from marine-associated micro-organisms

A. M. Sedeek et al.

Summary: Marine micro-organisms are a promising source for novel natural compounds with medical and biotechnological applications. This review discusses the limitations and recent strategies in investigating the marine microbial community for antimicrobial metabolites, including culture-dependent and culture-independent methods. The article also presents recent applications of culture-independent methods such as genome mining and metagenomics.

Optimization and Characterization of a Novel Exopolysaccharide from Bacillus haynesii CamB6 for Food Applications

Aparna Banerjee et al.

Summary: This study elucidates a new exopolysaccharide (EPS) produced by thermophilic Bacillus haynesii, which has high industrial value and functional properties such as antioxidant, emulsification, water-holding, oil-holding, and flocculation capacities. The EPS demonstrated amorphous surface roughness and low molecular weight heteropolymer composition. It also showed high thermal stability and polysaccharide nature based on physicochemical characterization.

The intriguing chemistry and biology of sulfur-containing natural products from marine microorganisms (1987-2020)

Yang Hai et al.

Summary: Natural products derived from marine microorganisms containing sulfur have shown diverse biological activities and are considered a potential resource for drug discovery. A total of 484 sulfur-containing natural products were isolated from marine microorganisms, with the majority being thioethers, thiazole/thiazoline compounds, and sulfoxides, sulfones, and thioesters. Among them, 133 compounds were further discussed on their structure-activity relationships, mechanisms of action, biosynthesis, and druggability in this systematic review conducted from January 1987 to December 2020.
