Awe Motivates Authentic-Self Pursuit via Self-Transcendence: Implications for Prosociality

Tonglin Jiang et al.

Summary: The emotion of awe can awaken self-transcendence, which in turn invigorates pursuit of the authentic self and has implications for prosociality. Awe is positively associated with pursuing the authentic self through self-transcendence, and awe-induced authentic-self pursuit is linked with higher general prosociality and lower inauthentic prosociality.

Activating Self-Transcendence Values to Promote Prosocial Behaviors among Adolescents during the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Moderating Role of Positive Orientation

Claudia Russo et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on people's lives and behaviors, particularly for the youngest and oldest generations. This study aimed to explore the effects of applying a web-based intervention on activating self-transcendence values and promoting COVID-19 prosocial behaviors among Italian adolescents, while considering the role of positive orientation. The results showed that self-transcendence values and positive orientation were positively associated with COVID-19 prosociality, with a stronger relationship observed in the intervention group. A significant three-way interaction was also found, highlighting the importance of positive orientation in the relationship between self-transcendence values and COVID-19 prosocial behaviors.

The dynamics of humanistic and biospheric altruism in conflicting choice environments

Beatrice Conte et al.

Summary: This article emphasizes that people's engagement in altruistic behaviors depends on the relative importance given to humanistic and biospheric altruism values, and unique behavioral outcomes result when these two values compete with each other. Evidence for the operational distinction between these two types of altruism was provided through two studies, and it was found that value centrality moderates the relationship between value activation and value expressive behavior.
