de Gennes Narrowing and Relationship between Structure and Dynamics in Self-Organized Ion-Beam Nanopatterning

Peco Myint et al.

Summary: In investigating the self-organized ion-beam nanopatterning of silicon using coherent x-ray scattering, a relationship similar to de Gennes narrowing is discovered. However, unlike the classic phenomenon, the dynamic surface exhibits a wide range of behaviors with compressed exponential relaxation at lengths corresponding to the dominant structural motif. This behavior is attributed to the morphological persistence of the self-organized surface ripple patterns.

20 μs-resolved high-throughput X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy on a 500k pixel detector enabled by data-management workflow

Qingteng Zhang et al.

Summary: The performance of the new 52 kHz frame rate Rigaku XSPA-500k detector for X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) applications was characterized at the Argonne Advanced Photon Source. A workflow system was deployed to handle the large data flow produced by the detector, allowing for rapid data reduction and providing human-in-the-loop feedback to experimenters. The XSPA-500k detector, software, and DM workflow system enable efficient acquisition and reduction of up to approximately 10^9 area-detector data frames per day, facilitating XPCS measurements on samples with weak scattering and fast dynamics.

Kinetics of Network Formation and Heterogeneous Dynamics of an Egg White Gel Revealed by Coherent X-Ray Scattering

Nafisa Begam et al.

Summary: The kinetics and microscopic dynamics of heat-induced gelation in hen egg white gel were studied using x-ray techniques, revealing a reaction-limited aggregation process, fractal structure, and temporal heterogeneity. The results were discussed in the broader context of attractive colloidal gel models.

NanoMAX: the hard X-ray nanoprobe beamline at the MAX IV Laboratory

Ulf Johansson et al.

Summary: NanoMAX is the first hard X-ray nanoprobe beamline at the MAX IV laboratory, utilizing the unique properties of the world's first operational multi-bend achromat storage ring to provide an intense and coherent focused beam for experiments. This paper presents the beamline optics design in detail, performance figures, and an overview of the surrounding infrastructure and operational diffraction endstation.

Microscopic Dynamics of Liquid-Liquid Phase Separation and Domain Coarsening in a Protein Solution Revealed by X-Ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy

Anita Girelli et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interplay between liquid-liquid phase separation and glass formation in biological systems, revealing distinct dynamics. Early stage LLPS is driven by the curvature of the free energy and speeds up with increasing quench depth, while late stage dynamics slows down, indicating a nearby glass transition. The observed dynamics show a ballistic type of motion, suggesting that viscoelasticity plays a significant role during LLPS.

From Femtoseconds to Hours-Measuring Dynamics over 18 Orders of Magnitude with Coherent X-rays

Felix Lehmkuehler et al.

Summary: X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) is a technique that enables the study of sample dynamics between micrometer and atomic length scales, benefiting from the increased brilliance of next-generation synchrotron radiation and Free-Electron Laser (FEL) sources. The time scales accessible by XPCS scale with the square of the coherent flux, allowing for studies over more than 18 orders of magnitude in time.

Photon-counting MCP/Timepix detectors for soft X-ray imaging and spectroscopic applications

Anton S. Tremsin et al.

Summary: Detectors with microchannel plates (MCPs) combined with Timepix readout offer high spatial and time resolution for soft X-ray imaging and spectroscopy applications, capable of operating at relatively high counting rates. The ongoing development of optimized MCP devices for soft X-ray photon-counting applications is guided by the results of these experiments, facilitating XPCS dynamics measurements down to sub-microsecond timescales.
