Boon and Bane of DNA Double-Strand Breaks

Ingo Schubert

Summary: DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) are interruptions in genetic information caused by various environmental and endogenous factors, posing risks of cell lethality and deleterious mutation if mis-repaired. Evolutionary achievements in DSB processing help maintain stable inheritance and drive adaptation by generating new genetic diversity. Targeted DSBs are crucial in genome editing for research, breeding, and therapy purposes.

The evolving complexity of DNA damage foci: RNA, condensates and chromatin in DNA double-strand break repair

Carel Fijen et al.

Summary: The formation of biomolecular condensates is crucial for cells to deal with stress and optimize enzymatic reactions, with RNA molecules and RNA-binding proteins playing important roles in double-strand break repair. The properties of condensates can influence the choice of repair pathway, and there are still open questions in this emerging field of research.
