Unintended socio-economic and health consequences of COVID-19 among slum dwellers in Kampala, Uganda

Summary: In the slums of Bwaise I and Bwaise III in Kampala, most respondents reported negative socio-economic and health consequences of COVID-19, including limited access to food, disruptions in education, drop in daily income and wages, and loss of employment. Qualitative findings revealed negative impacts on children's rights, education, housing quality, social behaviors, family and child care, income and employment, as well as health and access to healthcare services due to COVID-19 and its prevention measures.

The Metaphor of War in Political Discourse on COVID-19 in Uganda

Summary: This article examines the use of war metaphor in political communication during the COVID-19 pandemic in Uganda. The analysis of presidential addresses shows that the war metaphor was consistently used to portray the virus as a threat and justify combat behavior. This had consequences in shaping public understanding of the virus and legitimizing government interventions.

Summary: The study explored strategies for dispensing antiretrovirals during Covid-19 lockdown at the sub-national level in Uganda. Various strategies emerged, such as accelerating home-based delivery of antiretrovirals and leveraging community drug distribution points. The findings suggest that Covid-19 restrictions led to renewed interest in community-based ART delivery models.

Household response to an extreme shock: Evidence on the immediate impact of the Covid-19 lockdown on economic outcomes and well-being in rural Uganda

Summary: The study shows a significant impact of the Covid-19 lockdown on the economic and well-being of households in rural Uganda. There was a 60% decrease in non-farm income, leading to reduced food expenditure, decreased savings, and increased labor supply, resulting in a decline in well-being. The negative effects were more pronounced for wealthier households that were reliant on enterprise and salaried income.
