Deep Sourced Fluids for Peridotite Carbonation in the Shallow Mantle Wedge of a Fossil Subduction Zone: Sr and C Isotope Profiles of OmanDP Hole BT1B

Juan Carlos de Obeso et al.

Summary: Completely carbonated peridotites can provide insights into the reactions between carbon-rich fluids and mantle rocks. This study examined listvenites and serpentinites from the Samail ophiolite and found that they have significantly higher Sr-87/Sr-86 values and δ13C values compared to mantle values and other peridotite hosted carbonates in Oman. The underlying Hawasina sediments have even higher Sr-87/Sr-86 values. These results suggest that carbon-rich fluids derived from decarbonation of sediments migrated updip during subduction and influenced the composition of the peridotites.

Ductile deformation during carbonation of serpentinized peridotite

Manuel D. Menzel et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that deformation during the carbonate reaction process facilitates fluid flow and massive carbon sequestration. The onset of carbonation is marked by folded magnesite veins, and the subsequent deformation stops before the reaction is completed. The lithostatic pore pressures promote the occurrence of the reaction.

Formation of wide-blocky calcite veins by extreme growth competition

Liene Spruzeniece et al.

Summary: The study on Liassic limestones in Somerset, UK, revealed a special microstructure of calcite microveins with wide-blocky crystals, formed in open, fluid-filled fractures. The results suggest that growth competition and different types of seed grain play a crucial role in the formation of wide-blocky crystals in the veins.

Seismic faults triggered early stage serpentinization of peridotites from the Samail Ophiolite, Oman

Claire Aupart et al.

Summary: The serpentinization of mantle peridotites plays a significant role in influencing the rheology, tectonic behavior, and global water cycle of the oceanic lithosphere. This study presents findings based on samples from the Oman Drilling Project, focusing on the relationship between early stage faults and the main serpentinization event in abyssal peridotites. The results suggest a process involving seismic events followed by hydration and mesh texture formation during serpentinization.

A Mg Isotopic Perspective on the Mobility of Magnesium During Serpentinization and Carbonation of the Oman Ophiolite

Juan Carlos de Obeso et al.

Summary: Research in the Samail ophiolite in Oman shows that alteration of mantle peridotite leads to the formation of secondary minerals such as serpentine and Mg-rich carbonates. Partially serpentinized peridotites have similar Mg isotope ratios to the average mantle, while more extensively altered samples show significant shifts in Mg isotopic composition. Serpentine veins are enriched in Mg-26, whereas Mg-carbonate veins have lower Mg-26/Mg-24 ratios. These findings suggest that ongoing serpentinization and carbonation processes are occurring in Oman, with implications for CO2 sequestration.

Major Mineral Fraction and Physical Properties of Carbonated Peridotite (Listvenite) From ICDP Oman Drilling Project Hole BT1B Inferred From X-Ray CT Core Images

Keishi Okazaki et al.

Summary: Mineral proportions in listvenite in the Samail ophiolite were quantified using 3D X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) technology. Dolomite abundance is highest near the base of the listvenite layer, suggesting a source of Ca- and CO2-rich fluids at the paleo-plate boundary. Listvenite may serve as an overlooked reservoir for carbon in the Earth's interior as it shows limited material transfer during carbonation.

A common type of mineralogical banding in serpentine crack-seal veins

Matthew S. Tarling et al.

Summary: The study identifies a new type of mineralogically banded serpentine crack-seal vein, where thin bands of chrysotile are followed by thicker bands of polygonal serpentine/lizardite. This suggests a common set of processes involving crack opening and sealing in various structural sites within serpentinite-bearing faults and shear zones.
