Combined modified atmosphere packaging and guar gum edible coatings to preserve blackberry (Rubus glaucusBenth)

Diego A. Perez et al.

Summary: Blackberry fruits have a limited shelf life of 3-6 days and exploring preservation methods is important for their market viability. This study examined the effects of modified atmosphere packaging and edible coatings on blackberries. The combination of sealed polyethylene terephthalate clamshells with polylactic acid and guar gum edible coating showed potential for extended shelf life with minimal weight loss, offering commercial promise.

Assessment of a new edible film biodegradable based on starch-nystose to increase quality and the shelf life of blackberries

Gabrielly Terassi Bersaneti et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of an edible prebiotic coating of starch with the addition of nystose on blackberries, showing that the coating effectively delayed pH increase, maintained fruit firmness and anthocyanin content. The fruits coated with the starch-nystose film achieved good acceptance and purchase intention through sensory evaluation, indicating the potential of the biodegradable starch coating with added nystose to preserve quality and prolong the shelf life of fruits.

Use of edible alginate and limonene-liposome coatings for shelf-life improvement of blackberries

Prabesh Joshi et al.

Summary: Blackberries, an important seasonal fruit crop, are negatively impacted by their short shelf-life. This study found that blackberries coated with edible alginate and limonene-liposomes exhibited lower weight loss and CO2 release rate, and inhibited microbial growth under refrigeration. Quality indices such as total soluble solids, pH, total polyphenol content, and total anthocyanin content did not significantly deviate from non-coated blackberries.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of different edible coatings on the physicochemical properties of strawberries during storage, finding that coatings reduced weight loss and decay while maintaining nutritional content. Coatings did not significantly affect firmness and color of strawberries, and even improved sensory attributes of the fruit. TOPSIS analysis identified CMC as the most effective coating for preserving strawberries during storage.
