Future-Oriented Advanced Diarylethene Photoswitches: From Molecular Design to Spontaneous Assembly Systems

Hong-Bo Cheng et al.

Summary: Diarylethene (DAE) photoswitch, as a smart trigger, has shown superior performance in stimulus-responsive materials. The introduction of DAE into an assembly system has been an attractive strategy, enabling the manifestation of photochromic behavior at the system level, promoting the design and manufacture of advanced materials.

Cucurbit[8]uril-induced diarylethene thermally activated delay fluorescence supramolecular switch for sequential energy transfer

C. Wang et al.

Summary: In this work, an all visible-light-regulated supramolecular photo-switch was constructed based on a pyridinium-modified diarylethene derivative and cucurbit[8]uril. The switch exhibited efficient photocyclization and strong thermally activated delayed fluorescence, which could be regulated by visible light. The research has potential applications in information encryption.

Sensitive and Repeatable Photoinduced Luminescent Radicals from A Simple Organic Crystal

Yingxiao Mu et al.

Summary: Photoinduced organic radicals play a crucial role in various chemical and physical processes, however, the luminescent properties of these radicals are rarely reported. A unique luminescent radical has been discovered in a simple organic crystal, generated through gentle light irradiation, showcasing rapid and reversible generation due to the twist and asymmetric conformation of the isolated molecules with weak intermolecular interactions. Additionally, a dual-channel photosensitive device with rapid response and repeatability can be fabricated based on thin film of this organic crystal, enabling photoswitching on luminescence and conducting properties.

Turn-on mode diarylethenes for bioconjugation and fluorescence microscopy of cellular structures

Kakishi Uno et al.

Summary: This study optimized the performance of fDAEs in fluorescence microscopy and nanoscopy labeling by adjusting the structural design. The complete on-switching of protein labeling was achieved under violet and yellow-green light activation, showing excellent performance in fluorescence imaging. Transient on-off switching of double-labeled nanobodies was induced by irradiation with visible light, allowing for nanoscale superresolution imaging through switching and localization of individual fluorophores.

Molecular crystalline capsules that release their contents by light

Akira Nagai et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of single crystalline capsules of a photoresponsive molecule produced by simple recrystallization from organic solutions. The capsules respond rapidly to UV light stimuli, can release the captured solution or solute, and have the capability to take in any substance dissolved in organic solvents. The response can be controlled by the polarization of light.

Rapid amplitude-modulation of a diarylethene photoswitch: en route to contrast-enhanced fluorescence imaging

Gaowa Naren et al.

Summary: A water soluble diarylethene derivative with intense fluorescence from the colorless open form is synthesized and characterized, with the ability to rapidly switch the bright emission using amplitude modulated red light. This method is appealing for eliminating background fluorescence interference in measurements, especially in fluorescence microscopy. Lock-in detection can conveniently be applied for robust amplitude modulation of probe fluorescence in cell studies using fluorescence microscopy.
