Direct Measurement of pH Evolution in Aerosol Microdroplets Undergoing Ammonium Depletion: A Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Approach

Lin-Fang Li et al.

Summary: Accurately measuring the pH of atmospheric aerosols is crucial for understanding their impact on the environment and climate. However, current studies are limited to static measurements and do not capture the dynamic changes during atmospheric aging. In this study, a new technique using silver nanoparticles and Raman spectroscopy is introduced for continuous in situ pH measurement of aerosols. The results show that the depletion of ammonium continuously acidifies aerosol water over time, and the pH decay can be described by a universal exponential function. The ammonium depletion reaction is found to be a self-limiting process. This technique provides insights into the dynamic changes of aerosol acidity during complex atmospheric aging processes.

Ammonium Chloride Associated Aerosol Liquid Water Enhances Haze in Delhi, India

Ying Chen et al.

Summary: This study reveals that Delhi, a highly polluted city, has the highest reported aerosol water content worldwide. The presence of high aerosol water exacerbates air pollution and reduces visibility, while also inhibiting the dispersion of pollutants.

Enhanced aerosol particle growth sustained by high continental chlorine emission in India

Sachin S. Gunthe et al.

Summary: The study suggests that half of the reduced visibility in cities in India is attributed to local emission of gas-phase hydrochloric acid from waste-burning and industry. The high concentration of hydrochloric acid contributes to haze and fog formation, impacting the economy and human health. Identifying and regulating gaseous hydrochloric acid emissions could be critical to improving visibility and human health in India.

Oxidation of sulfur dioxide by nitrogen dioxide accelerated at the interface of deliquesced aerosol particles

Tengyu Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the rate of reaction between NO2 and SO2 in dense atmospheric particles is significantly higher than in dilute solutions, indicating that the surface of aerosol particles may be the driving force behind this rapid reaction kinetics. These results suggest that the oxidation of SO2 by NO2 at aerosol surfaces could be an important source of sulfate aerosols under polluted haze conditions.

How alkaline compounds control atmospheric aerosol particle acidity

Vlassis A. Karydis et al.

Summary: Research has shown significant changes and unexpected trends in aerosol particle acidity in different regions of the world over the past 50 years. While aerosol particle acidity has significantly decreased in Europe and North America, it has increased in Asia. These trends are strongly related to changes in nitric acid partitioning, sulfate production, aerosol hygroscopicity, and the presence of alkaline compounds on a global scale.

Size-resolved aerosol pH over Europe during summer

Stylianos Kakavas et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dependence of aerosol acidity on particle size, location, and altitude in Europe during summer using a chemical transport model. The pH changes more with particle size in northern and southern Europe, with differences of up to 1-4 pH units. All particle sizes become increasingly acidic with altitude, and nitrate levels are strongly affected by aerosol pH, with the highest levels predicted for specific particle ranges and locations.

Significant contrasts in aerosol acidity between China and the United States

Bingqing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively assessed aerosol acidity in China and the USA, revealing that Chinese aerosols are significantly less acidic compared to the USA due to higher mass concentrations and chemical composition differences. The differences in aerosol acidity between the two countries can be attributed to higher pollution levels and ammonia content in China.
