Reliability and Validity of a Method for the Assessment of Sport Rock Climbers' Isometric Finger Strength

Oliver Torr et al.

Summary: This study aimed to test the test-retest reliability and criterion validity of a low-resource isometric finger strength testing method. The results showed that this method has good test-retest reliability and reasonable criterion validity, making it suitable for assessing finger strength in intermediate to high-level rock climbers.

Which is the most reliable edge depth to measure maximum hanging time in sport climbers?

Eva Lopez-Rivera et al.

Summary: The study found that 8 mm edge depth seemed to be the most accurate for evaluating hanging time. For climbers of different levels, 10 mm or 12 mm edge depths were recommended based on their climbing abilities.

Isolated finger flexor vs. exhaustive whole-body climbing tests? How to assess endurance in sport climbers?

Jiri Balas et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate systemic and local muscle oxygen responses during sport climbing. The results showed that both systemic and muscle oxygen kinetics determine climbing-specific endurance, and exhaustive climbing and isolated finger flexion endurance tests are interrelated and suitable for assessing climbing-specific endurance. An exhaustive climbing test with progressive wall angle allows determination of the muscle oxygenation breakpoint.

Muscle strength and endurance in high-level rock climbers

Robert Rokowski et al.

Summary: The study found that higher elite climbers have superior forearm muscle strength and endurance compared to elite/advanced climbers, which are significantly correlated with climbing performance. Intermittent muscle endurance is among the performance factors in difficult rock climbing, but is less important than maintaining high forces during sustained muscle contractions.

Ecological Validity and Ecological Validity

John F. Kihlstrom

Summary: Egon Brunswik coined the term ecological validity to describe the correlation between perceptual cues and the states and traits of a stimulus. Martin Orne then adapted the term to refer to the generalization of experimental findings to the real world outside the laboratory. Both uses of the term are legitimate, as the ecological validity of the cues in an experiment determines the ecological validity of the experiment itself.
