Generation of a transient base-stabilised arylalumylene for the facile deconstruction of aromatic molecules

Debabrata Dhara et al.

Summary: In this study, a stable base-free arylalumylene with a sterically encumbered terphenyl substituent has been reported. However, attempts to form a base-stabilised arylalumylene with a relatively small terphenyl substituent and an N-heterocyclic carbene base resulted in a masked dialumene stabilized by one peripheral aromatic group. Interestingly, further examination revealed that both this masked dialumene and its transient form decouple into the desired base-stabilised arylalumylene under different conditions. Computational insights on the dissociation of the dialumene and the mechanism of arene deconstruction by alumylene were also obtained.

Chemoselective C-C σ-Bond Activation of the Most Stable Ring in Biphenylene**

Richard Y. Kong et al.

Summary: This study reports the chemoselective cleavage of a six-membered aromatic ring in biphenylene using an aluminum(I) complex, which is unprecedented. Insight into the origin of the chemoselectivity was obtained through a detailed mechanistic analysis, revealing that differences in the symmetry and radial extension of the frontier molecular orbitals of the aluminum(I) fragment compared to common transition metal fragments contribute to the divergent reactivity observed.

A Free Aluminylene with Diverse σ-Donating and σ/π-Doubly Accepting Ligand Features for Transition Metals

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel free N-aluminylene, carbazolylaluminylene 2b, was synthesized and characterized. The coordination behavior of 2b towards transition metal centers was investigated, revealing diverse coordination modes and the ability to modulate electronic properties without changing coordinated atoms. Furthermore, an unprecedented aluminylene-alumanyl transformation was observed, leading to the formation of a rare terminal Cu-alumanyl complex 8. The electronic structures of these complexes and the mechanism of transformation were studied through density functional theory calculations.

Activation of Nitrogen-Rich Substrates by Low-Valent, Redox-Active Aluminum Species

Weixing Chen et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the reactivity of low-valence Al-II species with nitrogen-rich substrates, involving oxidation-reduction reactions and structural characterization of the products formed during reactions with azides or azo compounds. The results highlight the unique reactivity of alpha-diimine-ligated dialumanes in activating nitrogen-rich molecules through cooperation of the metal and the redox ligand.

Reversible Dissociation of a Dialumene**

Rosalyn L. Falconer et al.

Summary: Dialumenes are neutral Al-I compounds with Al=Al multiple bonds. A long and extreme trans-bent Al=Al bond with a low dissociation energy and bond order is reported in an amidophosphine-supported dialumene. In solution, the dialumene can dissociate into monomeric Al-I species, exhibiting reactivity through two modes of reaction: as dialumene or as aluminyl monomers.
