How side-chain hydrophilicity modulates morphology and charge transport in mixed conducting polymers

Aditi Khot et al.

Summary: Organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors (OMIECs) are a new class of organic electronic materials with dual modes of conduction. Side-chain engineering is crucial for optimizing OMIEC performance, with simulations suggesting that a uniform hydrophilic side-chain distribution is optimal for maximizing charge mobility and conductivity. There are also alternative side-chain engineering strategies that can be explored for improving OMIEC performance.

Electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction at conductive polymer PEDOT: Insight from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations

Farzaneh Sarrami et al.

Summary: This study investigates the detailed mechanisms of Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) on PEDOT by carrying out ab initio Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (MD) calculations with an explicit solvent. The research confirms the involvement of proton transfer and the role of water as a solvent in the formation of H2O2 during the ORR process. It also theoretically validates the simultaneous occurrence of a series of reaction steps during O2 reduction on PEDOT in acidic media.

Controlling Electrochemically Induced Volume Changes in Conjugated Polymers by Chemical Design: from Theory to Devices

Maximilian Moser et al.

Summary: The electrochemically induced volume changes in organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors (OMIECs) have a significant impact on their performance in electronic devices. This study shows that alterations in the molecular structure of OMIECs affect various processes during their electrochemical swelling, requiring careful balancing of these phenomena to maximize device performance. The findings provide insights into the importance of understanding the molecular processes in OMIECs for their potential applications.

Top-Down Coarse-Grained Framework for Characterizing Mixed Conducting Polymers

Aditi Khot et al.

Summary: This study presents a coarse-grained modeling framework flexible enough to explore the structure-function relationships of organic mixed conductors exhibiting both ionic and electronic conductivity. The model successfully replicates experimental trends and reveals the complex interplay between polymer morphology, ionic-electronic coupling, and electrolyte distribution. This framework provides validation for future applications in establishing structure-function relationships in this important material class and suggests near-term opportunities for tailoring mixed conduction via side-chain design.

Is There Anything Better than Pt for HER?

Johannes Novak Hansen et al.

Summary: Efforts to find cheap alternatives to platinum for the hydrogen evolution reaction have not yet found a catalyst with intrinsic activity that can compete with platinum. It is important to measure intrinsic catalytic activities and consider the impact of mass-transport limitations on observed activity. Despite achieving the highest turnover frequency for platinum, the true intrinsic HER activity for platinum in acid remains unknown due to mass transport limitations.

Ion Pair Uptake in Ion Gel Devices Based on Organic Mixed Ionic-Electronic Conductors

Tyler J. Quill et al.

Summary: Passive ion pair uptake from an ion gel electrolyte into an OMIEC is demonstrated in high-speed solid-state devices, while no uptake is observed with a polymerized ionic liquid (PIL) electrolyte. This uptake is confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray scattering, showing morphological changes to the OMIEC. In situ Raman spectroscopy reveals a reorganization of both anions and cations during gating, suggesting potential benefits for neuromorphic devices based on OMIECs.

Water Intake and Ion Exchange in PEDOT:Tos Films upon Cyclic Voltammetry: Experimental and Molecular Dynamics Investigation

Najmeh Delavari et al.

Summary: Through a combination of experiments and simulations, the study revealed significant morphological and mass changes in the PEDOT:Tos film during oxidation/reduction processes, confirming the replacement of tosylate by chloride ions. The relative mass change between the most oxidized and reduced states was around 10-14%, and the overall material loss during voltammetry cycles indicated that a portion of the material expelled during reduction did not return during subsequent oxidation. This research provides crucial insights into the molecular processes underlying the redox process of PEDOT:Tos film, essential for improving and evaluating the performance of bioelectronic devices.
