In situ observation of heterogeneous catalytic organic reactions via aggregation-induced emission luminogens

Jinzhao Ji et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of customized aggregation-induced emission luminogens for visualizing heterogeneous catalytic organic reactions and enabling catalyst screening. The retro-Diels-Alder reaction was used as a model reaction, with montmorillonite K10 identified as the best catalyst through screening.

Catalytic Approaches to Multicomponent Reactions: A Critical Review and Perspectives on the Roles of Catalysis

Brenno A. D. Neto et al.

Summary: In this review, catalyzed multicomponent reactions (MCRs) and the importance of catalysis combined with key parameters are comprehensively described. Catalysis not only improves yields and shortens reaction times, but it also plays a vital role in achieving greener protocols and advancing the MCR field of research. Key parameters such as temperature, catalyst amounts, and reagent quantities are analyzed. The role of solvents, often overlooked in MCRs, and their combined effects with catalysis are critically discussed. The review also presents and discusses stereocontrolled MCRs, which are rarely observed without the presence of a catalytic system. Perspectives on the use of catalytic systems for improved and greener MCRs are presented.

Reusable Deep Eutectic Solvents for Clean ε-Caprolactam Synthesis under Mild Conditions

Shiqin Sun et al.

Summary: A deep eutectic solvent (DES) with adjustable Bronsted acidity was easily prepared using choline chloride (ChCI) and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH). This DES [ChCl][TfOH](3) exhibited great stability and excellent catalytic performance in the Beckmann rearrangement reaction. Under mild conditions, high cydohexanone oxime (CHO) conversion (100%) and epsilon-caprolactam selectivity (98.8%) were achieved. The DES [ChCI][TfOH](3) could be easily prepared, recovered, and reused for multiple runs without significant loss of catalytic performance. The reaction had a free energy (Delta G) of -32.8 and an activation energy (E-a) of 39.82 kJ mol(-1). DFT results showed that the intermolecular hydrogen bond between ChCI and TfOH improved the thermal stability of DES and provided a good sponge effect for the active hydrogen catalytic center required for the reaction. This study demonstrated the potential practicality of the DES catalytic system for the Beckmann rearrangement reaction, offering advantages such as good yields, short reaction times, and easy catalyst recoveries.
