Characterization of anthropogenic organic matter and its interaction with direct yellow 27 in wastewater: Experimental results and perspectives of resource recovery

Sicong Yao et al.

Summary: The concept of natural organic matter of anthropogenic origin is introduced, and its characteristics and interaction with chemical pollutants are investigated using various analytic methodologies. The results indicate that the presence of AOM can significantly influence the fate, transport, and toxicity of pollutants in the environment.

Degradation of the endocrine-disrupting 4-nonylphenol by ferrate(VI): biodegradability and toxicity evaluation

Warunee Limmun et al.

Summary: In this study, the biodegradability of 4-NP and its degradation products in the presence of ferrate(VI) were evaluated. It was found that 4-NP was not completely mineralized and formed degradation products when ferrate(VI) was added. Mass spectra analysis revealed a unique peak at m/z 223 for the degradation products of 4-NP with Fe(VI). Furthermore, the estrogenic activity of 4-NP in aqueous solution was significantly reduced with increasing Fe(VI) concentration.

Critical assessment of an equilibrium-based method to study the binding of waterborne organic contaminants to natural dissolved organic matter (DOM)

Simone Rizzuto et al.

Summary: This study proposes an improved experimental approach using highly hydrophilic membranes with small molecular cut-off to study the interaction between DOM and organic contaminants. Results showed that the affinity between ISU and DOM is significantly influenced by pH and DOM concentration, while using membranes with smaller pore size can prevent DOM trans-membrane diffusion.

Aqueous photo-degradation of Flupyradifurone (FPD) in presence of a natural Humic Acid (HA): A quantitative solution state NMR analysis

Bhawna Chaubey et al.

Summary: This study characterized the molecular interaction and photo-degradation behavior of halogen-containing insecticide FPD in the presence of humic acid KHA. The results showed a significant decrease in photo-degradation rate constant of FPD in the presence of KHA, with different degradation rates observed through H-1 and F-19 NMR spectral changes. FPD binds to KHA through the chlorinated pyridine ring, and exhibits a stronger association compared to DFA-KHA. Both FPD and DFA bind with KHA through weak non-covalent interactions, hindering the photo-degradation process of FPD.

Occurrence, uptake, and health risk assessment of nonylphenol in soil-celery system simulating long-term reclaimed water irrigation

Yaqi Hu et al.

Summary: The study found that celery had limited enrichment capacity for nonylphenol (NP) and low residual rates of NP in the soil-celery system. Under long-term reclaimed water irrigation, human exposure to NP from celery and soil posed safe conditions with total noncancer hazard quotients (HQs) lower than the acceptable risk level.
