Electrochemically produced local pH changes stimulating (bio)molecule release from pH-switchable electrode-immobilized avidin-biotin systems

Ronaldo Badenhorst et al.

Summary: The immobilized avidin-biotin complexes were used to release biotinylated molecules by inducing local pH changes near the electrode surface through electrochemical reactions. The nitro-avidin complex was dissociated by increasing pH with electrochemical O-2 reduction, while the avidin complex was split by decreasing pH with electrochemical oxidation of ascorbate. The release of molecule cargo species was achieved by applying small electrical potentials on the modified electrodes (-0.4 V or 0.2 V for the O-2 reduction or ascorbate oxidation, respectively).

Protein release from interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels triggered by endogenous biomarkers

D. Massana Roquero et al.

Summary: This biocompatible drug delivery system shows a highly sensitive stimuli-responsive behavior to hydrogen peroxide, effectively releasing encapsulated proteins through oxidative degradation of boronate esters. The release can be triggered by low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and can also be induced by incorporating oxidase enzymes in the presence of their substrates, serving as biomarkers for physiological disorders.

Operando Local pH Mapping of Electrochemical and Bioelectrochemical Reactions Occurring at an Electrode Surface: Effect of the Buffer Concentration

Paolo Bollella et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential for in situ quantification of the thickness of the boundary layer where pH changes occur during electrochemical reactions. By using confocal fluorescent microscopy with two pH-sensitive fluorescent dyes, the impact of buffer concentration on local pH changes was successfully quantified. The study also investigated the local pH variations resulting from electrochemical reactions on non-modified graphite electrodes and bioelectrochemical reactions.

The pH-Dependent Controlled Release of Encapsulated Vitamin B1 from Liposomal Nanocarrier

Adam Juhasz et al.

Summary: This study introduced a method to encapsulate thiamine into asolectin liposomes and investigated the encapsulation efficiency and release performance of the system. The results demonstrated that the liposomal system showed better drug retention compared to the unpackaged vitamin B1 under physiological and gastric conditions.
