Separating Physics and Dynamics Grids for Improved Computational Efficiency in Spectral Element Earth System Models

Summary: The study demonstrates an alternative high-order, element-based mapping approach used in E3SM to implement a quasi-equal-area, finite volume physics grid. Simulations with different divisions of physics grids show that the alternative physics grid does not fundamentally alter the model solution and can increase the throughput of physics calculations. The reduction of physics columns with a 2 x 2 grid can significantly impact model performance, leading to improved efficiency or throughput depending on resource configuration.
