Intensity scaling limitations of laser-driven proton acceleration in the TNSA-regime

S. Keppler et al.

Summary: In this study, experimental results on laser-driven proton acceleration using high-intensity laser pulses are reported. The researchers found that the power law scaling of the maximum proton energy with laser pulse energy strongly depends on the scale length of the preplasma, which is influenced by the temporal intensity contrast. The study also observed a deviation from this scaling above a certain threshold, which was attributed to an earlier generation and higher amplitude of the electric field accelerating the ions, but a less effective acceleration due to the fastest protons outrunning the region of highest field strength.

Enhanced laser-driven proton acceleration using nanowire targets

S. Vallieres et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the use of nanostructured target surfaces to enhance laser-driven proton acceleration, showing that nanowire structures can increase the maximum proton energy, temperature, and number. Experimental results and Particle-In-Cell simulations support the findings, with a focus on analyzing the impact of nanowire length, diameter, and gap size on the enhancement of the longitudinal accelerating electric field.

Selective Ion Acceleration by Intense Radiation Pressure

A. McIlvenny et al.

Summary: The study reports on the selective acceleration of carbon ions during the interaction of ultrashort, circularly polarized and contrast-enhanced laser pulses with ultrathin carbon foils. Under optimized conditions, energies per nucleon of the bulk carbon ions reached significantly higher values than contaminant protons, indicating different dominant acceleration mechanisms for the two ion species. It is suggested that the preceding laser energy reaching the target before the main pulse arrives plays a key role in a preferential acceleration of the heavier ion species.

Proton beam quality enhancement by spectral phase control of a PW-class laser system

T. Ziegler et al.

Summary: Experimental investigations on proton acceleration from solid foils irradiated with PW-class laser pulses show that positive third order dispersion values applied to short pulses are favorable for proton acceleration, achieving a maximum energy of 70 MeV at 18 J laser energy. The controlled spectral phase modulation of the driver laser by means of an acousto-optic programmable dispersive filter enhances proton acceleration significantly, proving the robustness and applicability of this enhancement effect for different target materials and thicknesses as well as laser energy and temporal intensity contrast settings. Application relevant proton beam quality was reliably achieved over many months of operation with appropriate control of spectral phase and temporal contrast conditions using a state-of-the-art high-repetition rate PW laser system.
