Research on nanoparticles in human perfused placenta: State of the art and perspectives

Leonie Aengenheister et al.

Summary: Increasing human exposure to nanoparticles raises concerns for public health, especially vulnerable risk groups like pregnant women and their developing fetuses, but nanomedicine offers promise for pregnancy treatment. Studies on ex vivo human placental perfusion of NPs reveal characteristics such as size and surface modifications influence placental uptake and transfer significantly, highlighting the need for relevant controls in future studies. Ex vivo placental perfusion model shows potential in revealing insights on NP effects on placental tissue functionality, impacting maternal-fetal health indirectly.

Label-free detection of uptake, accumulation, and translocation of diesel exhaust particles in ex vivo perfused human placenta

Eva Bongaerts et al.

Summary: The study found that diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) can accumulate in key cell types of the placental tissue and cross the human placenta, although in limited amounts. These findings are crucial for risk assessment and protection of pregnant women, emphasizing the urgent need for further research on the developmental toxicity of ambient particulates mediated by the placenta, both directly and indirectly.

Understanding nanoparticle endocytosis to improve targeting strategies in nanomedicine

Mauro Sousa de Almeida et al.

Summary: Nanoparticles have diverse applications, particularly in nanomedicine for detecting and treating diseases like cancer and inflammation. Understanding the mechanisms of cellular uptake and intracellular localization of nanoparticles is crucial for therapeutic applications. Factors such as physicochemical properties, endocytic pathways, and cellular uptake regulators play key roles in the application of nanoparticles in medicine.
