MOFs in the time domain

Daniel J. Cerasale et al.

Summary: In order for the proposed applications of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials to be successfully realized, it is crucial to address the lack of investigation into the time-dependent behaviors of MOFs compared to their equilibrium properties. Despite some existing research on MOF dynamics and time-dependent phenomena, a vast amount of studies still focus on equilibrium or steady-state properties. This review highlights the disparity between the limited research on key time-dependent phenomena and the need for a broader and deeper understanding for the future advancements in the field.

Let the light be a guide: Chromophore communication in metal-organic frameworks

Corey R. Martin et al.

Summary: This study focuses on how to manipulate the photophysical properties of chromophores within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through their interactions within the MOF matrix. By utilizing hybrid crystalline motifs and photochromic linkers, preferential alignment of chromophores can be induced to enhance communication. Integration within a framework opens up opportunities for solid-state applications, and the controlled alignment of chromophores is crucial for the development of futuristic technologies.

Luminescent Metal-Organic Frameworks for Nitroaromatic Compounds Detection

Tianhao Zhao et al.

Summary: Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs), a subclass of MOFs, have attracted great attention for their potential in practical applications. Combining luminescent properties and diverse topological structures, LMOFs show promising potentials for sensing. Developing sensitive, selective, and reversible sensors for Nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) is in great demand due to their threat to environment and homeland security, and recent research on LMOFs sensors for NACs has provided insights into photophysical properties, sensing behaviors, mechanisms, existing problems, and prospects for further developments.

Photoresponsive frameworks: energy transfer in the spotlight

Corey R. Martin et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the use of spiropyran-containing metal- and covalent-organic frameworks as platforms to enhance photochromic behavior and directional energy transfer in solid-state materials. By controlling the photochromic properties of spiropyran derivatives, control over material optoelectronic properties can be achieved, as observed through conductivity measurements and time-resolved photoluminescence studies. Modeling of FRET processes between different chromophores and estimating Forster critical radii and ET rates support the experimentally observed changes in material photoluminescence.

A near-infrared emitting MOF: controlled encapsulation of a fluorescein sensitizer at the time of crystal growth

Guillaume Collet et al.

Summary: This study presents a lanthanide-based metal-organic framework (MOF) that emits near-infrared (NIR) light with Yb3+ sensitized by fluorescein (FL) as a low energy absorbing chromophore (FL@CD-MOF-161). The unique design of CD-MOF-161 allows for efficient loading and spreading of chromophores within the crystal volume, achieved by trapping FL molecules in its pores during synthesis and crystal growth.

Alkylamino-terephthalate ligands stabilize 8-connected Zr4+ MOFs with highly efficient sorption for toxic Se species

Anastasia D. Pournara et al.

Summary: Zr4+ metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with terephthalate ligands containing small to medium alkyl-amino functional groups are proven to be highly effective sorbents for Se(iv) and Se(vi) anions, with exceptional sorption capacities, rapid kinetics, wide pH range capability, and efficiency against competitive anions. They also demonstrate high sorption capability for the particularly toxic SeCN-, a property never before seen in MOF materials.
