Self-ordering and organization of in-line particle chain in a square microchannel

Jiazheng Liu et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the self-ordering and organization of an in-line particle chain flowing through a microchannel. The results show that small-particle chains exhibit a relatively complex migration, with three typical states observed. The interparticle spacing evolves in a similar regularity with the three states. The study provides insight into the regularities of in-line particle chains and their potential applications.

Confinement effect on the viscoelastic particle ordering in microfluidic flows: Numerical simulations and experiments

Anoshanth Jeyasountharan et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of confinement ratio on the self-ordering dynamics of particles suspended in a viscoelastic liquid and flowing in a microfluidic channel is investigated through numerical simulations and experiments. The results show that the confinement ratio affects the self-ordering distance and relative particle velocity.

Viscoelastic Particle Train Formation in Microfluidic Flows Using a Xanthan Gum Aqueous Solution

Anoshanth Jeyasountharan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the self-assembly of particle trains driven by viscoelastic shear-thinning aqueous xanthan gum solution in a microfluidic device. The concept of local particle concentration is introduced to explain the occurrence of multi-particle structures in the particle train, and it is shown that using a single tube to connect the sample drastically reduces doublets/triplets, resulting in a more uniform particle train. These findings lay the foundation for optimized applications such as deterministic droplet encapsulation and flow cytometry in viscoelastic liquids.

Non-Newtonian Droplet Generation in a Cross-Junction Microfluidic Channel

Maryam Fatehifar et al.

Summary: Enhancing the shear-thinning behavior by increasing polymer concentrations in the dispersed phase decreases droplet size and increases detachment time. The choice of a shear-dependent fluid results in decreased droplet size compared to Newtonian fluids, but increased detachment time due to higher apparent viscosity.

Dual dean entrainment with volume ratio modulation for efficient droplet co-encapsulation: extreme single-cell indexing

Jack Harrington et al.

Summary: The future of single cell diversity screens requires larger sample sizes and higher throughput methods to accurately describe cellular systems. The author utilized Dean entrainment to efficiently co-encapsulate single cells with reporter beads at high rates, improving assay signal-to-noise and capturing a high percentage of cells.
