Bioactive compounds: Application of albumin nanocarriers as delivery systems

Flavia F. Visentini et al.

Summary: Enriched products with bioactive compounds (BCs) have the potential to produce a wide range of health effects. Encapsulation is a strategy to overcome the hydrophobic nature and sensitivity to environmental factors of BCs. Albumins, such as human serum albumin (HSA), bovine serum albumin (BSA), ovalbumin (OVA), and alpha-lactalbumin (ALA), have the ability to bind, protect, encapsulate, and introduce BCs into nutraceutical or pharmaceutical matrices. This review focuses on natural origin BCs, different albumin-based nanostructures for encapsulation, and the main application areas for BCs-loaded albumin systems.

Effects of Microbial Transformation on the Biological Activities of Prenylated Chalcones from Angelica keiskei

Yina Xiao et al.

Summary: Microbial transformation was used to discover new derivatives of isobavachalcone, 4-hydroxyderricin, and xanthoangelol from Angelica keiskei. Rhizopus oryzae and Mucor hiemalis could transform isobavachalcone and 4-hydroxyderricin, respectively, while Mucor hiemalis and Mortierella ramanniana var. angulispora could transform xanthoangelol. Various metabolites were produced through scale-up fermentation, and their cytotoxicity and tyrosinase inhibitory activity were evaluated. Introduction of a 4'-O-glucopyranosyl group reduced cytotoxicity and improved tyrosinase inhibitory activity.
