Toward a multidimensional analysis of transmission spectroscopy II. Day-night-induced biases in retrievals from hot to ultrahot Jupiters

William Pluriel et al.

Summary: Hot Jupiters are ideal candidates for transmission spectroscopy analysis due to their large atmospheric scale height and strong thermal and chemical heterogeneities between their day- and nightside. It has been found that the current retrieval algorithms using 1D forward models yield biased results for ultrahot Jupiters. By quantifying the effective temperature domain, it is shown that accounting for nonisothermal vertical temperature profiles is essential for accurate retrievals. In addition, it is demonstrated that using nonrandomized input data in Bayesian frameworks is valid as long as observational uncertainties are taken into account.

Toward a multidimensional analysis of transmission spectroscopy II. Day-night-induced biases in retrievals from hot to ultrahot Jupiters

Aurelien Falco et al.

Summary: Hot Jupiters (HJs) are good targets for transmission spectroscopy analysis due to their high signal-to-noise ratio. Their atmospheres exhibit thermal and chemical heterogeneities between the day and nightside, with a stronger chemical dichotomy for the hottest planets. Retrieval algorithms using 1D forward models have been found to produce biased results for molecular abundances in ultrahot Jupiters. Simulations and analysis using a 1D retrieval code demonstrate the significance of nonisothermal vertical temperature profiles and the impact of absorbers on the accuracy of parameter estimation. The study also highlights the validity of using non-randomized input data in Bayesian frameworks when accounting for observational uncertainties.

All along the line of sight: a closer look at opening angles and absorption regions in the atmospheres of transiting exoplanets

Joost P. Wardenier et al.

Summary: Transmission spectra of transiting exoplanets provide valuable information about their atmospheres. In this study, a new formula is derived to estimate the opening angle of a planet, which determines the atmospheric region impacting the transmission spectrum. Results show that the opening angle varies among different types of planets, with ultra-hot Jupiters having a smaller opening angle compared to other planets.

TRIDENT: A Rapid 3D Radiative-transfer Model for Exoplanet Transmission Spectra

Ryan J. MacDonald et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that the multidimensional nature of exoplanet atmospheres can strongly influence transmission spectra. TRIDENT is a new 3D radiative-transfer model that rapidly computes these transmission spectra, helping to unlock the final barrier to 3D atmospheric retrievals.

On Atmospheric Retrievals of Exoplanets with Inhomogeneous Terminators

Luis Welbanks et al.

Summary: This study systematically explores the limitations of 1D models in atmospheric retrievals using synthetic and current observations. It finds that previous reported biases are due to specific model assumptions rather than intrinsic limitations of 1D atmospheric models. The study also revises atmospheric retrievals of two hot Jupiters and introduces a 2D retrieval framework for accurate inference of average atmospheric properties and insights into the impact of atmospheric inhomogeneities on spectral ranges.

Constraining Mornings and Evenings on Distant Worlds: A new Semianalytical Approach and Prospects with Transmission Spectroscopy

Summary: Transmission spectroscopy has been successful in characterizing exoplanet atmospheres, but there may be differences in temperature, pressure, and spectra between the morning and evening terminators due to the opacity sources causing planetary radii to vary with wavelength. Confining these factors is crucial for understanding weather patterns in exoplanets and planetary formation signatures.

Aurora: A Generalized Retrieval Framework for Exoplanetary Transmission Spectra

Luis Welbanks et al.

Summary: Atmospheric retrievals of exoplanetary transmission spectra provide important constraints on various properties at the day-night atmospheric terminator. Aurora, a next-generation atmospheric retrieval framework, allows for a wide range of atmospheric compositions and related complexities, with the ability to address hydrogen-rich and hydrogen-poor atmospheres, inhomogeneous clouds/hazes, and noise modeling functionalities. Demonstrations of Aurora on observations of HD 209458 b, K2-18b, and TRAPPIST-1 d show robustness, agnostic approach to constrain atmospheric composition, and potential identification of trace gases and enhanced levels of O3.
