Bipolar Redox-Active Molecules in Non-Aqueous Organic Redox Flow Batteries: Status and Challenges

Min Li et al.

Summary: Recent advances in the development of organic bipolar redox-active molecules for redox-flow batteries have uncovered three main strategies to prepare these molecules. They can be used as both anolyte and catholyte in RFBs, enabling symmetric flow battery design with improved properties. However, developing BRMs that outperform vanadium RFBs remains a challenge.

Molecular Dynamics in Ionic Liquid/Radical Systems

Bulat Gizatullin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the molecular dynamics of ionic liquid with organic stable radicals using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) techniques. Different interaction processes, driven by dominating dipolar or scalar interactions, were identified depending on the size and chemical properties of the radicals. The NMR relaxation dispersion was decomposed into rotational and translational contributions to identify the corresponding correlation times of motion and interactions. The influence of electron relaxation time and electron-nuclear spin hyperfine coupling was also discussed.

Molecular Design Features for Charge Transport in Nonconjugated Radical Polymers

Ying Tan et al.

Summary: Conducting polymers based on open-shell radical moieties have potential advantages, but the overreliance on TEMPO radical limits charge transport. Studies suggest that more delocalized open-shell species may have greater potential for charge transfer.

Polymeric Blatter's Radical via CuAAC and ROMP

Adrian Saal et al.

Summary: In this study, a Blatter radical-containing polymer backbone was synthesized using copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition and consecutive ring-opening metathesis polymerization. The resulting polymer was electrochemically investigated in cyclic voltammetry experiments, showing potential for the utilization of triazinyl radicals in all-organic polymer batteries. Furthermore, the easy modification of the alkyne bond allows for further derivatization.

Summary: The influence of aryl substituents on tetrazinanone ring formation was studied, showing that strong electron-donating substituents and electron rich heterocycles reduce yield, while electron-withdrawing groups and meta- or para-substitution facilitate formation of the tetrazine ring.

A divergent strategy for the synthesis of redox-active verdazyl radical polymers

Francois Magnan et al.

Summary: Stable radical polymers have been widely studied for their applications in various fields, but the range of synthetic strategies is currently limited. Common methods include transition-metal catalyzed polymerization and sequential polymerization of monomers containing radical precursors, which are then converted to radicals post-polymerization. Copper-assisted azide-alkyne cycloaddition chemistry has been used sparingly, mainly for producing pi-conjugated and particle-bound polymers.

Theoretical study of hydrogen bonding interactions in substituted nitroxide radicals

Thufail M. Ismail et al.

Summary: The intermolecular hydrogen bonding of nitroxide radicals with various electron acceptors is studied comprehensively and quantitatively in this work. The electronic effects of nitroxide radicals are assessed through the analysis of molecular electrostatic potential, establishing a linear relationship between V-min and interaction energy values. The nature of hydrogen bonding in these systems is found to be dependent on the substituents present in the nitroxide radicals' structural motif, with electrostatic components playing a large role in the interaction energy.
