Progression of neuroimaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease in older adults: A 6-year follow-up study

Yuanjing Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the progression and interrelationships of cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) markers. The results showed that cSVD markers, except for perivascular spaces (PVS), progressed faster with increasing age. Regional white-matter hyperintensity (WMH) progressed faster in males and less-educated individuals. An increase in global WMH score was associated with a higher risk of incident lacunes. These findings suggest that cSVD progresses faster in older, male, and less-educated individuals, and greater loads of WMH, PVS, and lacunes indicate faster cSVD progression.

Decreased nighttime heart rate variability and progression of white matter hyperintensities of presumed vascular origin. A prospective study in community-dwelling older adults

Oscar H. Del Brutto et al.

Summary: This study found an inverse association between decreased nighttime heart rate variability (HRV) and white matter hyperintensities (WMH) progression in community-dwelling older adults. The results suggest that sympathetic overactivity may play a role in this relationship.

High Social Risk Influence Progression of White Matter Hyperintensities of Presumed Vascular Origin: A Prospective Study in Community-Dwelling Older Adults

Oscar H. Del Brutto et al.

Summary: This study suggests that high social risk is associated with the progression of white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) of presumed vascular origin. Poor social relationships and deficient support networks were independently associated with WMH progression. These findings are important for planning preventive policies to reduce progression of cerebral small vessel disease among vulnerable populations.

Determinants and Temporal Dynamics of Cerebral Small Vessel Disease: 14-Year Follow-Up

Mengfei Cai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the temporal dynamics of small vessel disease (SVD) and the impact of vascular risk factors and baseline SVD burden on its progression. The findings showed that SVD progresses significantly over time, but mild white matter hyperintensities (WMH) rarely progress to severe WMH. Older age, baseline SVD burden, and vascular risk factors were associated with faster WMH progression and incident lacunes.

Neuroimaging investigation of the intracranial vasculature is warranted in older adults with lacunes of presumed vascular origin

Oscar H. Del Brutto et al.

Summary: This study examined the association between lacunes and intracranial artery stenosis (IAS) and white matter hyperintensities (WMH) in older adults. Results showed that lacunes are more strongly associated with IAS than with WMH, highlighting the importance of lacunes in cerebral small vessel disease.
