Surface eruptive dynamics of 2018 small phreatic eruption of Iwo-Yama volcano, Japan: Constraints from seismo-acoustic observation and mud suspension rheology

Dan Muramatsu et al.

Summary: The 2018 small phreatic eruption at Iwo-yama volcano in Japan was studied using infrasonic, seismic, and visual observations. The study revealed that the transition of infrasonic pulses may be caused by changes in bubble bursting styles due to increased water fraction in the mud suspension. The widening of the vent was attributed to the addition of water and the subsequent weakening of soil strength.

Locating hydrothermal fluid injection of the 2018 phreatic eruption at Kusatsu-Shirane volcano with volcanic tremor amplitude

Taishi Yamada et al.

Summary: The analysis of a phreatic eruption at the Motoshirane cone of Kusatsu-Shirane volcano in 2018 showed that tremor signals coincided with volcanic inflation before the surface activity onset. It is suggested that small shear fractures induced by sudden hydrothermal fluid injection triggered the eruption.

The 2018 phreatic eruption at Mt. Motoshirane of Kusatsu-Shirane volcano, Japan: eruption and intrusion of hydrothermal fluid observed by a borehole tiltmeter network

Akihiko Terada et al.

Summary: This study estimates the mass and energy budgets for the 2018 phreatic eruption of Mt. Motoshirane on Kusatsu-Shirane volcano in Japan, based on data from tiltmeters and weather radar echoes. By analyzing the tilt records and a subvertical crack model, the study infers the path of fluid intrusion from a hydrothermal reservoir. Despite the small ejecta mass, the eruption had a significant impact on the energy budget of the Kusatsu-Shirane volcano. The findings suggest that underground water played a role in absorbing some of the ascending fluid, acting as a buffer against sudden hydrothermal fluid intrusion.
