Estimating the added value of GRACE total water storage and uncertainty quantification in seasonal streamflow forecasting

Li Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the value of incorporating GRACE total water storage anomalies (TWSA) and quantifying the uncertainty in model residuals in seasonal streamflow prediction. Results show that MLR models perform well, with TWSA contributing moderately to forecast skill and uncertainty quantification making a significant impact.

GRACE reveals depletion of water storage in northwestern South America between ENSO extremes

Silvana Bolanos et al.

Summary: The dynamics of terrestrial water storage play a crucial role in various natural and social phenomena, including water security and environmental sustainability. Using GRACE data, this study focused on the Magdalena-Cauca river basin in northwestern South America and found a gradual depletion of both terrestrial water storage and groundwater storage in the basin since the end of 2010. The spatial patterns of water depletion within the basin correspond closely to the periods between La Nina and El Nino extreme phases of ENSO.

Summary: This study demonstrates the approximation of independently parameterizing each reservoir in a multi-reservoir cascade in hydrological modeling. It also shows the potential unintended consequences of this independence approximation in simulating hydrological extremes in complex reservoir cascades.

Hannes Mueller Schmied et al.

Summary: WaterGAP is a global hydrological model that assesses water resources on all land areas of the Earth, particularly focusing on water use and stress under climate change. It improves understanding of continental water storage variations, with a specific focus on overexploitation and depletion of water resources.
