3D Confinement Regulates Cell Life and Death

Oksana Y. Dudaryeva et al.

Summary: The biophysical properties of the cellular microenvironment, such as stiffness and geometry, have been shown to influence cell function, with recent findings implicating 3D confinement as a significant regulator of cell behavior. This study demonstrates that the extent of 3D confinement affects cell viability and proliferation, leading to changes in nuclear morphology and YES-associated protein (YAP) localization. The effects of confinement on cell behavior scale with the degree of 3D confinement, highlighting the importance of 3D confinement as a regulator of cell function.

Colonization versus encapsulation in cell-laden materials design: porosity and process biocompatibility determine cellularization pathways

Cleo Parisi et al.

Summary: Seeding living cells into materials is a promising approach to replicate the complexity and functionality of living matter. A two-dimensional map based on materials' pore size and cytocompatibility has been proposed as a guide to building cellularized materials, which may lead to the design of new materials capturing the complexity and function of biological materials.
