The 2018 European heatwave led to stem dehydration but not to consistent growth reductions in forests

Roberto L. Salomon et al.

Summary: Heatwaves have strong and sometimes irreversible impacts on forest ecosystems. This study used high-temporal resolution dendrometer data to investigate the effects of the 2018 European heatwave on tree growth and water status. The findings showed that while annual stem growth was not consistently reduced, stems experienced temporary shrinkage due to water depletion. Conifer species were less capable of rehydrating overnight compared to broadleaves, indicating lower resilience to transient stress.

Decoupled heatwave-tree growth in large forest patches of Larix sibirica in northern Mongolian Plateau

Liang Shi et al.

Summary: The study shows a coupled relationship between tree growth and heatwaves, with increased heatwave frequency since 1996 leading to a significant decline in tree growth in large forest patches. However, the relationship between tree growth and heatwaves remained in medium and small forest patches after 1996. Landscape heterogeneity, such as patch size and slope position, can alleviate the pressure of temperature warming and reduce rapid decline in tree growth under high-frequency heatwaves in Mongolia Plateau.

Resilience of subarctic Scots pine and Norway spruce forests to extreme weather events

L. Matkala et al.

Summary: The study found that two subarctic forest stands, one with Scots pine and the other with Norway spruce, experienced different extreme weather events, with the spruce forest being less resilient. Overall, both forests, especially the trees, showed resilience to weather extremes and experienced no long-term damage.

Partitioning of forest floor CO2 emissions reveals the belowground interactions between different plant groups in a Scots pine stand in southern Finland

Kira Ryhti et al.

Summary: Changes in climate can have unpredictable effects on belowground carbon processes in boreal forests. Understanding the interactions of soil processes and quantifying potential changes in the carbon cycle are crucial. This study successfully partitioned the sources of forest floor CO2 emissions in a mature Scots pine stand in southern Finland using nine different treatment methods, showing intense competition between plant roots and soil microbes in carbon processes.

No time to rest: seasonal dynamics of non-structural carbohydrates in twigs of three Mediterranean tree species suggest year-round activity

Anna M. Davidson et al.

Summary: The study indicates that perennial plants in temperate climates have evolved strategies to store and manage non-structural carbohydrates to survive seasonal periods of photosynthetic inactivity. The dynamics of NSC in trees are influenced by seasonal changes, with the highest reserves entering dormancy and depletion during bloom time.

Soil nutrient availability alters tree carbon allocation dynamics during drought

Leonie Schonbeck et al.

Summary: Drought can affect the allocation of carbon and nutrients in trees, but elevated soil nutrient availability may help trees respond better to drought stress. Fertilization can improve root metabolism and function, stimulating carbon allocation to belowground tissues, thus mitigating the impact of drought on trees.
