Anion-π Catalysis Enabled by the Mechanical Bond

John R. J. Maynard et al.

Summary: We have reported a series of anion-it catalysts based on rotaxanes. The mechanical bond between a bipyridine macrocycle and an axle containing an NDI unit plays an intrinsic role in the observed activity. Our results show that a [3]rotaxane catalyst can selectively catalyze a Michael addition reaction, which is otherwise disfavored under Bronsted base conditions dominated by a decarboxylation pathway.

A SemiddotmiddotmiddotO bonding catalysis approach to the synthesis of calix[4]pyrroles

Qingzhe Tong et al.

Summary: This study presents a chalcogen bonding catalysis approach for synthesizing calix[4]pyrrole derivatives. The Se···O bonding interactions between selenide catalysts and ketones promoted the condensation reactions between pyrrole and ketones, resulting in the formation of calix[4]pyrrole derivatives with moderate to high yields.

Sequence-Selective Decapeptide Synthesis by the Parallel Operation of Two Artificial Molecular Machines

Javier Echavarren et al.

Summary: This study reports the preparation of a decapeptide through the parallel operation of two rotaxane-based molecular machines, involving simultaneous operation of two molecular peptide synthesizers, selective residue activation, ligation, and product release. The design of the machines enables the synthesis of a product that exceeds the capabilities of individual small-molecule machines, reminiscent of the ligation and post-translational modification of proteins in biology.

Asymmetric Pnictogen-Bonding Catalysis: Transfer Hydrogenation by a Chiral Antimony(V) Cation/Anion Pair

Jian Zhang et al.

Summary: Pnictogen-bonding catalysis based on sigma-hole interactions has been the focus of attention for synthetic chemists. A novel chiral antimony cation/anion pair was utilized to catalyze the enantioselective transfer hydrogenation of benzoxazines with remarkable efficiency and enantiocontrol potency even at 0.05 mol % loading. Investigation into the properties of the catalyst and mechanistic insights were conducted through nonlinear effect studies, 1H NMR, LC-MS, and control experiments.

Bioinspired Ether Cyclizations within a π-Basic Capsule Compared to Autocatalysis on π-Acidic Surfaces and Pnictogen-Bonding Catalysts

Xiaoyu Hao et al.

Summary: This study reports on how the broad responsiveness of ether cyclizations to diverse inputs helps to fill the gap in understanding the unique characteristics of system catalysts. Cyclizations within supramolecular capsules show exceptional speed and selective violations of the Baldwin rules, while cyclization on pi-acidic aromatic surfaces exhibits unique autocatalytic properties.

Pnictogen-Bonding Catalysis and Transport Combined: Polyether Transporters Made In Situ

Heorhii Humeniuk et al.

Summary: Combining catalysis and transport across lipid bilayer membranes allows directional access to a solvent-free and structured nanospace for accelerating new chemical reactions. Synergistic anion and cation transporters with high activity are identified, leading to formal rate enhancements of over one million in cascade cyclizations for product formation in situ. This operational system opens up intriguing perspectives for exploiting all aspects of this unique nanospace in important chemical transformations.

Crystalline Sponge Method: X-ray Structure Analysis of Small Molecules by Post-Orientation within Porous Crystals-Principle and Proof-of-Concept Studies

Nicolas Zigon et al.

Summary: The crystalline sponge (CS) method is a new single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) method for analyzing small molecule structures without sample crystallization, utilizing single-crystalline porous coordination networks to absorb small guest molecules. The principle of the CS method involves post-crystallization of the absorbed guest molecules, templated by pre-latticed cavities, and has been widely applied to synthetic chemistry and natural product studies.
