Self-conscious emotions and breastfeeding support: A focused synthesis of UK qualitative research

Dawn Leeming et al.

Summary: Research on women's experiences of infant feeding and related moral discourse suggests that self-conscious emotions play a significant role in breastfeeding support interactions, including feelings of shame, guilt, embarrassment, and pride. Studies show that receiving support may challenge mothering identity and emotional well-being, with women often managing interactions to minimize uncomfortable self-conscious emotions. Providers of breastfeeding support have the potential to either validate or undermine women's emotions, contributing to feelings of embarrassment, guilt, or humiliation. Further research is needed to explore the emotional nuances of women's interactions with supporters.

Avoidance of bottles during the establishment of breastfeeds in preterm infants

Elizabeth Allen et al.

Summary: Avoiding the use of bottles during the establishment of breastfeeding in preterm infants may increase the likelihood of successful breastfeeding and improve both any breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding outcomes up to six months postdischarge. The evidence mostly supports the use of cup feeding, while further high-certainty studies are needed to determine the effectiveness of a tube feeding strategy.
