Novel Temperature-Responsive Rosin-Derived Supramolecular Hydrogels Constructed by New Semicircular Aggregates

Zhaolan Zhai et al.

Summary: In this study, a highly water-soluble rosin-based surfactant was synthesized and used to prepare temperature-responsive supramolecular hydrogels. The hydrogels exhibited a unique twisted semicircular aggregate microstructure and excellent mechanical properties and shear-recovery properties. By adjusting the temperature, the hydrogels could transform into viscoelastic solutions. NMR and FTIR spectroscopy were used to explore the self-assembly mechanism of the hydrogels.

Cryo-TEM and rheological study on shear-thickening wormlike micelles of zwitterionic/anionic (AHSB/SDS) surfactants

Shuo Lu et al.

Summary: Experiments revealed the formation of hybrid wormlike micelles with significant viscosity under the joint action of zwitterionic surfactants and sodium dodecyl sulfate, primarily due to the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions between the two molecules. Additionally, the longitudinal growth of wormlike micelles also contributed to viscosity enhancement, while shear-induced alignment of wormlike micelles was identified as the major cause of shear-thickening.

Organic Acid-Enhanced Viscoelastic Surfactant and Its Application in Fracturing Fluids

Zhe Li et al.

Summary: The VES fracturing fluid developed in this study exhibited good temperature and shear resistance, excellent proppant-carrying and gel-breaking abilities, and caused less damage to core permeability and low corrosion of steel under acidic conditions. The rheological properties of the VES fluid could be switched multiple times without any decay by changing the pH values, indicating its excellent reusability for fracturing procedures. This study demonstrates the potential applications of reusable VES fracturing fluids based on supramolecular pH-responsive surfactants.

Summary: A novel ionic liquid surfactant, benzyltrimethylammonium erucate (ErBTA), was developed through a neutralization reaction, showing low melting point and excellent water solubility. ErBTA can form micelles at low concentration and transition to a viscoelastic fluid at higher concentration, offering potential applications in clean fracturing and fluid drag reduction in oil/gas recovery.

Tail unsaturation tailors the thermodynamics and rheology of a self-assembled sugar-based surfactant

Johan Larsson et al.

Summary: The self-assembly of long-tail surfactants can form nanoscale structures that alter the rheology of the system, but this process is affected by the high Krafft temperature. A novel sugar-based surfactant with an unsaturated C16-tail was synthesized, showing the ability to form a stable micellar solution over a wide temperature range, creating a non-Newtonian, viscoelastic fluid. These findings have implications for the development of sustainable formulated products with remarkable thermal resilience.

Xuejiao Wang et al.

Summary: The main advance in double-chain surfactant systems lies in their application in medicine and material science, particularly in drug delivery systems. Researchers have discovered that reversible assembly and disassembly of complex double-chain surfactants can be achieved using a photo-responsive supramolecular strategy. This new perspective paves the way for the development of novel light-responsive assembly materials in aqueous media and biological field.

Drag Reduction in the Flow of Aqueous Solutions of a Mixture of Cocamidopropyl Betaine and Cocamide DEA

Jacek Rozanski et al.

Summary: This study presents results of rheological tests and pressure drop measurements during the flow of aqueous solutions of a mixture of drag reducing surfactants through straight pipes. The formation of wormlike micelles was observed at temperatures below 10 degrees C. Drag reduction in the solutions was noted between 3 to 45 degrees C, with decreasing effectiveness at temperatures above 25 degrees C. The critical value of Re-c(,0) number for drag reduction onset was found to be dependent on temperature, pipe diameter, and surfactant weight ratio. The critical value of Re-c(,0) number has been linked to the clouding of CAPB/DEA solutions.

Summary: A novel rosin-based photoresponsive anionic amphiphile, sodium N-azophenyl maleopimaric acid imide carboxylate (AzoMPCOONa), with the ability to switch between trans and cis isomers under UV/visible light irradiation, was successfully synthesized. The photoresponsive viscoelastic solution obtained by mixing AzoMPCOONa and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) exhibited dramatic changes in viscosity and aggregate structure upon UV irradiation, attributed to the photoisomerization of the azobenzene group in AzoMPCOONa.
