Biological invasion costs reveal insufficient proactive management worldwide

Ross N. Cuthbert et al.

Summary: The global increase in biological invasions is putting pressure on ecological and economic systems. However, the lack of standardized measurements across spatial, taxonomic, and temporal scales makes it difficult to assess the effectiveness of current management expenditures. Geographic distribution of management costs heavily favors North America and Oceania, with most expenditures directed towards invasive alien invertebrates in terrestrial environments.

Quantitative critique of leaf-based paleo-CO2 proxies: Consequences for their reliability and applicability

Wilfried Konrad et al.

Summary: Various proxies have been developed to reconstruct paleo-CO2 levels from fossil leaves, but a lack of a common conceptual framework has hindered efforts for inter-comparison. More extensively parameterised proxies, such as the optimisation model, are likely to be the most robust, while simpler proxies tend to under-predict CO2 levels, especially in warm and moist environments. The identification of a structural under-prediction may help explain why simpler proxies often produce lower estimates of paleo-CO2 compared to more complex proxies.

Negative impacts of invasive predators used as biological control agents against the pest snail Lissachatina fulica: the snail Euglandina 'rosea' and the flatworm Platydemus manokwari

Justin Gerlach et al.

Summary: Snails of the Euglandina rosea species complex and Platydemus manokwari flatworms were introduced to control giant African snails since 1955, but they have caused mass extinction of Pacific island snails instead. These predators have negative impacts on native snail faunas and are not suitable for biological control.

Dog domestication and the dual dispersal of people and dogs into the Americas

Angela R. Perri et al.

Summary: Advances in ancient DNA analysis have revealed close relationships between human and dog population histories, suggesting that dogs were domesticated in Siberia around 23,000 years ago and accompanied humans as they rapidly dispersed into the Americas around 15,000 years ago.

Origins of modern human ancestry

Anders Bergstrom et al.

Summary: New findings in palaeoanthropological and genomic records have reshaped our understanding of the origins of modern human ancestry. The article outlines three key phases in the evolution of modern human ancestry, from the global expansion of modern humans to their interactions with Neanderthals and Denisovans, the African origin of modern human diversity, and the complex separation of modern human ancestors from archaic human groups. It argues that there is no single point in time when modern human ancestry was limited to a specific birthplace, and that the appearances of defining traits of Homo sapiens align with a variety of evolutionary histories.

Global acceleration in rates of vegetation change over the past 18,000 years

Ondrej Mottl et al.

Summary: Over the past 18,000 years, global vegetation has undergone significant changes due to both climate fluctuations and increasing human activities. Utilizing fossil pollen sequences and statistical methods, researchers have observed a remarkable acceleration in vegetation compositional change globally, starting between 4.6 and 2.9 thousand years ago, surpassing any previous changes over the last 18,000 years.

Non-uniform tropical forest responses to the 'Columbian Exchange' in the Neotropics and Asia-Pacific

Rebecca Hamilton et al.

Summary: The study reveals that afforestation in tropical regions varied spatially and temporally over the past millennium, depending on social, economic, and biogeographic factors. This highlights the unequal and divergent origins of the Anthropocene as a socio-political and biophysical process, emphasizing the need for higher-resolution, targeted analyses to fully understand pre-colonial and colonial era human-tropical landscape interactions. The impact of Spanish colonization on forest dynamics across the tropics was found to be variable, influenced by regional land use strategies, cultural, social, and biophysical factors.
