Estimate of the carbon footprint of astronomical research infrastructures

Summary: Astronomical research facilities, such as space telescopes and ground-based observatories, have a significant impact on astronomers' carbon footprint. The carbon emissions from these infrastructures are higher than other activities. Greenhouse gas emission factors were used to estimate the contribution of astronomical space missions and observatories. The results show that research infrastructures make the largest contribution to astronomers' carbon footprint.

The contribution of global aviation to anthropogenic climate forcing for 2000 to 2018

Summary: Global aviation operations contribute to anthropogenic climate change by emitting carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, water vapor, soot and sulfate aerosols, and increasing cloudiness due to contrail formation. The growth of aviation activity and climate change impact has shown a marked increase in recent years, with contrail cirrus being the largest contributor to the warming effect.

Trends in research on the carbon footprint of higher education: A bibliometric analysis (2010-2019)

Summary: This study examined the current status of research on the carbon footprint of higher education using bibliometric analysis, identifying the University of California System as the most productive organization, the United States as the most active research region, and the Journal of Cleaner Production as the most common publication outlet. It also revealed strong academic-cooperation relationships and six clusters of keywords in the field.

Carbon footprinting of universities worldwide: Part I-objective comparison by standardized metrics

Summary: Universities around the world play a key role in driving innovation towards a carbon-neutral society, yet only a small number of them are collecting and publishing their carbon footprints. This study analyzed comprehensive carbon footprint data from 20 universities globally, identifying key factors contributing to their carbon footprints. By homogenizing carbon footprint performances using various metrics, the study found that some universities have achieved per capita carbon footprints close to or below 1.0 Mt CO2e/person and year, regardless of their size.

Summary: This study systematically reviews the current situation of CF assessment in academic institutions, identifying differences in time metric, functional unit, data collection boundary, emission sources and factors, and carbon offsetting. Despite these differences, a reduction over time is observed, highlighting the need for improvements and solutions to challenges in the CF of higher education institutions.
