The EC-Earth3 Earth system model for the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6

Ralf Doscher et al.

Summary: EC-Earth3 is a Earth system model contributing to CMIP6, featuring a flexible coupling framework, various model configurations, ensuring simulations comparability across different HPC systems, and demonstrating improved physical and dynamic features. It represents a clear step forward for European community ESM with improved physical performance compared to CMIP5 version.

A circulation-based performance atlas of the CMIP5 and 6 models for regional climate studies in the Northern Hemisphere mid-to-high latitudes

Summary: Global climate models play a crucial role in climate research, but they were not originally designed to reproduce regional-scale climate. Efforts have been made to improve the models themselves and refine their output at the regional scale using downscaling methods. However, it is still challenging to correct errors in the large-scale circulation represented by the global models. The latest generation of models performs better on average, with a moderate relationship between performance and horizontal resolution in the atmosphere.

Improved atmospheric circulation over Europe by the new generation of CMIP6 earth system models

Juan A. Fernandez-Granja et al.

Summary: The study evaluates state-of-the-art GCMs and finds an overall improvement in atmospheric circulation features, although this improvement is uneven across models and large frequency biases still exist for the main synoptic patterns. Some CMIP6 models show similar or worse results than CMIP5 counterparts, but consistent improvements have been found in most cases, indicating better capture of key synoptic conditions by the new models.

Land-Atmosphere Interactions Exacerbated the Drought and Heatwave Over Northern Europe During Summer 2018

Paul A. Dirmeyer et al.

Summary: The exceptional 2018 drought and heatwave in northern Europe resulted in forest fires in Sweden, searing heat in Germany, and water restrictions in England, primarily due to exacerbated heatwave caused by land-atmosphere coupling. The continuous land-atmosphere feedbacks were significantly influenced by unusually low soil water content over wide areas, which further intensified the heatwave across much of northern Europe.
