Pilot plant demonstration of temperature impacts on the methanogenic performance and membrane fouling control of the anaerobic membrane bioreactor in treating real municipal wastewater

Chao Rong et al.

Summary: The study found that at low temperatures, methane production decreased and dissolved methane increased, leading to a reduction in methanogenic performance. The membrane rejection can offset the deteriorated anaerobic digestion, ensuring stable COD removal efficiency. However, at low temperatures, the increased microbial products and residual inorganic foulants can aggravate membrane fouling.

Novel strategy for membrane biofouling control in MBR with CdS/MIL-101 modified PVDF membrane by in situ visible light irradiation

Lingfeng Ni et al.

Summary: Novel control strategies for membrane biofouling with eco-friendly photocatalytic technology using metal-organic frameworks were studied. The synthesized CdS/MIL-101 photocatalyst modified membrane C2 showed enhanced hydrophilicity and water permeability compared to the pristine membrane C0, leading to an extended filtration cycle and excellent biofouling alleviation effect. The photocatalytic membrane demonstrated remarkable antimicrobial effect and higher antifouling capabilities in filtration tests, with reactive species playing a predominant role in the anti-biofouling processes.

Large pilot-scale submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor for the treatment of municipal wastewater and biogas production at 25 ° C

Zhe Kong et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the operation of a large pilot-scale submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor for biogas production from municipal wastewater, achieving excellent effluent quality with high COD and BOD5 removal efficiencies. The biogas yield and methane content were also determined, and the long-term operation provided insights into COD and nitrogen mass balances. The membrane module showed a high flux and an online backwash chemical cleaning system helped maintain membrane performance.

Hui Cheng et al.

Summary: The study revealed the high conversion rates of high-solid AnMBRs in sewage sludge and food waste treatment, with net energy balance increasing as the food waste ratio rises. By establishing the relationship between carbon to nitrogen ratio and net energy balance, a new approach for predicting energy balance in different regions was introduced.

Wetting- and fouling-resistant hollow fiber membranes for dissolved methane recovery from anaerobic wastewater treatment effluents

G. S. M. D. P. Sethunga et al.

Summary: Anaerobic wastewater treatment processes are increasingly popular due to their advantages in sludge management and net energy consumption, with methane production being a major benefit. Utilizing porous membranes for membrane contactor (MC) process offers a promising way to recover dissolved methane (dCH4) from anaerobic effluents, although membrane wetting and fouling remain implementation challenges. The development of wetting- and fouling-resistant hollow fiber membranes coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and post-treated with PDMS-based amphiphilic copolymers shows improved performance in recovering methane from anaerobic effluents, making it a viable alternative for industrial practices.

Selina Hube et al.

Summary: Direct membrane filtration (DMF) is a promising alternative secondary wastewater treatment process in Iceland, where biofouling combined with organic/inorganic fouling influences the cake fouling development. Various strategies such as elevating flushing water temperature, increasing filtration and flushing crossflow velocities, and extending filtration-flushing duration interval have been studied to mitigate fouling during DMF of municipal wastewater.

Summary: A 20 L hollow-fiber submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor (SAnMBR) was used to treat real domestic wastewater with varying HRTs. The study found that organic removal efficiency was good at HRTs between 6 and 12 h, but also acceptable at 4 h, albeit with lower biogas production and higher sludge yield. Controlling GSV and MLSS can decrease fouling rate and achieve sustainable operation.

Performance of dynamic anaerobic membrane bioreactor (DAnMBR) with phase separation in treating high strength food processing wastewater

Siti Baizurah Mahat et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the feasibility of using low-cost dynamic membranes to treat food processing wastewater, with the anaerobic DM bioreactor showing stable performance at an OLR of 5.0 g COD/L day. Significant correlation between COD removal through acidogenesis and methanogenesis at different OLR levels indicates the beneficial impact on methanogenic archaea activity. The DM fouling was attributed to the release of soluble microbial products and extracellular polymeric substances, leading to improved filtration resistance.
