Avalanches and many-body resonances in many-body localized systems

Alan Morningstar et al.

Summary: In this study, we numerically investigate the avalanche instability and many-body resonances in strongly disordered spin chains exhibiting many-body localization (MBL). We find that finite-size systems behave like MBL within the MBL regimes, and we identify landmarks that divide the MBL regimes into different subregimes based on the onset of avalanches and many-body resonances.

Observation of Stark many-body localization without disorder

W. Morong et al.

Summary: Thermalization is a common process in statistical physics where a physical system reaches an equilibrium state defined by properties like temperature, even in isolated quantum many-body systems. However, many-body localization (MBL) can lead to the preservation of a non-thermal state. Recent theoretical work suggests that quantum many-body systems with a spatially increasing field, but without disorder, can also exhibit MBL, known as 'Stark MBL'. Studies with a trapped-ion quantum simulator have observed Stark MBL, showing that the quantum system can evade thermalization despite the absence of disorder.

Phenomenology of Spectral Functions in Disordered Spin Chains at Infinite Temperature

Lev Vidmar et al.

Summary: Recent research on disordered spin chains has focused on the relationship between exact numerical calculations and the existence of a many-body localization phase transition, particularly in cases where disorder is significantly greater than spin interaction strength. A phenomenological theory based on proximity to the noninteracting limit, such as the Anderson insulator, has been introduced to explain intriguing features observed in these systems. This theory quantitatively describes the dynamics of certain observables in finite interacting systems across a wide range of disorders.

Quench Dynamics of a Fermi Gas with Strong Nonlocal Interactions

Elmer Guardado-Sanchez et al.

Summary: We induce strong nonlocal interactions in a 2D Fermi gas in an optical lattice using Rydberg dressing, measure the interactions, and study the lifetime of the gas in the presence of tunneling, finding that tunneling does not reduce the lifetime. Investigating the interplay of nonlocal interactions with tunneling, we find that strong nearest-neighbor interactions slow down the relaxation dynamics of charge-density waves in the gas. Our work opens the door for quantum simulations of systems with strong nonlocal interactions such as extended Fermi-Hubbard models.

Nonergodic dynamics in disorder-free potentials

Ruixiao Yao et al.

Summary: The article discusses the dynamics of interacting particles in disorder-free potentials, focusing on a combination of harmonic binding with a constant tilt, and proposes a simple picture of an effective local tilt theory. Various cases are demonstrated through examples, including spinless fermions, spinful fermions, and bosons with a larger local on-site Hilbert space. The article also explores domain-wall dynamics, revealing nonergodic features even in the presence of a relatively weak tilt.

Constraint-Induced Delocalization

Piotr Sierant et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of quenched disorder on the dynamics of locally constrained quantum spin chains was investigated. Large-scale numerical experiments revealed no evidence of many-body localization even under high disorder. The analysis showed that quenched disorder terms in constrained systems act in two distinct and competing ways, preventing the system from entering into a regime of strong disorder and weak interaction where many-body localization occurs. Through observations in XY-type constrained models, it was further clarified that local quenched disorder terms must be represented as a series of nonlocal terms in unconstrained variables.

Observing non-ergodicity due to kinetic constraints in tilted Fermi-Hubbard chains

Sebastian Scherg et al.

Summary: This study investigates non-ergodic dynamics in a tilted optical lattice, revealing long-lived initial-state memory attributed to emergent kinetic constraints. Through experiments and numerical simulations, a detailed microscopic understanding of this behavior is provided, suggesting the possibility of complex thermalizing behavior in the absence of disorder in many-body systems.

Finite-size scaling analysis of the many-body localization transition in quasiperiodic spin chains

Adith Sai Aramthottil et al.

Summary: By analyzing the finite-size scaling of average gap ratio and entanglement entropy in a one-dimensional Heisenberg spin chain with quasiperiodic potential, it was found that the MBL transition belongs to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless class and exhibits a sublinear drift in critical disorder strength. Additionally, a double-peak structure of on-site magnetizations in the ergodic regime was observed, suggesting strong correlations in the quasiperiodic potential.

Dynamical obstruction to localization in a disordered spin chain

Dries Sels et al.

Summary: We investigate a one-dimensional XXZ spin chain in a disordered magnetic field, utilizing the sensitivity of eigenstates and the low-frequency asymptotes of the spectral function to understand the system's behavior. We identify a region of maximal chaos with exponentially enhanced susceptibility, separating the many-body localized phase from the diffusive ergodic phase. This region exhibits slow transport characteristics, which we argue highly constrains any possible localization transition in the thermodynamic limit, suggesting an absence of the localized phase.

Many-body localization in tilted and harmonic potentials

Ruixiao Yao et al.

Summary: The study examines the nonergodic dynamics of interacting spinless fermions in a tilted optical lattice using a XXZ spin chain model. Time dynamics are analyzed with exact propagation for small chains and matrix product state techniques for larger sizes, showing significant differences in entanglement dynamics based on initial states. Pair tunneling dominates in the quantum quench scenario, while entanglement growth is modulated by local effective tilt in the presence of a harmonic potential. Strong revival phenomena are observed for deeply localized regimes with large tilts or curvatures.

Local integrals of motion and the quasiperiodic many-body localization transition

Hansveer Singh et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the many-body localization (MBL) transition for interacting fermions in quasiperiodic potentials by constructing local integrals of motion (LIOMs) in the MBL phase as time-averaged local operators. Numerical analysis shows that the norm of these time-averaged operators drops discontinuously to zero across the transition, indicating that LIOMs become unstable at a critical localization length of order unity. The results suggest that the quasiperiodic MBL transition occurs at stronger quasiperiodic modulations and has a larger correlation-length critical exponent than previously thought.

Ergodicity breaking with long-range cavity-induced quasiperiodic interactions

Piotr Kubala et al.

Summary: The analysis of the extended Bose-Hubbard model with quasiperiodic infinite-range interactions reveals that a significant fraction of eigenstates becomes localized as the strength of the global interactions is increased. The behavior scales differently depending on the choice of the thermodynamic limit. The system is asymptotically ergodic by scaling the interaction strength to keep the energy extensive, while the MBL regime appears to be stable with superextensive scaling of the energy, which can be experimentally verified in cavity quantum electrodynamics setups through quench spectroscopy.

Stark many-body localization: Evidence for Hilbert-space shattering

Elmer V. H. Doggen et al.

Summary: The study reveals that an interacting quantum spin chain under a linearly increasing field exhibits a unique type of localization known as Stark many-body localization, showing strong dependence on initial conditions. Contrary to the conventional eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, the system violates it at any finite gradient of the field, indicating a crucial distinction from disorder-driven many-body localization. This finding is in agreement with recent predictions based on localization via Hilbert-space shattering.

Summary: Many-body localization is a theoretical concept describing the interplay of quantum interference and many-body interaction-induced dephasing. The study investigates how dephasing affects observable variance in the disordered spinless Hubbard model, revealing strong temporal fluctuations in local charge density. Results comparing exact computations with the time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation shed light on the correlations underlying the damping mechanism and its implications for experimentally relevant observables.

Summary: Through a detailed study of the number entropy SN(t), we find that in a many-body localized phase, the particle number distribution shows a continuously growing tail, indicating that the interacting system never fully localizes even under strong disorder.
