Current challenges of improving visibility due to increasing nitrate fraction in PM2.5 during the haze days in Beijing, China

Shuya Hu et al.

Summary: The annual mean PM2.5 mass concentration in Beijing, China has decreased due to strict emission controls, but the nitrate (NO3-) mass fraction in PM2.5 has been increasing gradually. The study found that NO3- became the main constituent of PM2.5 during haze pollution episodes, and its contribution to visibility reduction increased with higher air pollution levels. Efforts to reduce particulate NO3- and its precursors are crucial for improving air quality and visibility in Beijing.

Measurements of the Diversity of Shape and Mixing State for Ambient Black Carbon Particles

Kang Hu et al.

Summary: This study quantified the dynamic shape of ambient BC-containing particles for the first time by measuring the electrical mobility diameter and optical volume-equivalent diameter; particles in urban Beijing with larger rBC cores showed higher non-sphericity and dynamic shape factor; a chi-VR space was proposed to describe particle shape and include all ambient quantified BC morphologies in optical models.

Larger than expected variation range in the real part of the refractive index for ambient aerosols in China

Gang Zhao et al.

Summary: The characteristics of ambient aerosol refractive index (RRI) in China were studied for the first time based on field measurements at four sites with different atmospheres. The results showed that the variation in ambient aerosol RRI significantly affects the scattering coefficient and direct radiative effects of the aerosols.

Measurement report: Strong light absorption induced by aged biomass burning black carbon over the southeastern Tibetan Plateau in pre-monsoon season

Tianyi Tan et al.

Summary: Southern Asia's intense biomass burning activities can transport black carbon particles to the Tibetan Plateau, affecting the region's climate warming. Research shows that the transported black carbon particles significantly increase in concentration and coating layer thickness on the plateau, enhancing total light absorption and potentially impacting climate warming.

Technical note: The enhancement limit of coagulation scavenging of small charged particles

Naser G. A. Mahfouz et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the limit of the enhancement of coagulation scavenging of charged particles is 2, which results in a dramatic drop in survival probability when the coagulation sink is doubled. Therefore, it is crucial to take this counterbalancing effect into consideration when studying ion-induced new-particle formation and ion-enhanced new-particle growth in the atmosphere.
