Global trends and local variations in land take per person

Mengmeng Li et al.

Summary: Urban areas globally are expanding faster than their population, but with local variations. The study shows that central areas of large cities have become denser over the past few decades, while rural areas have experienced the opposite trend. Additionally, many densely populated regions in the Global South have also undergone densification, potentially leading to trade-offs in terms of human well-being.

The direct and lag effects of administrative division adjustment on urban expansion patterns in Chinese mega-urban agglomerations

Rundong Feng et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively evaluates the mechanism and effects of administrative division adjustment (ADA) on the urban expansion patterns of three mega-urban agglomerations in China. The results show that ADA has a significant impact on urban expansion, with different effects on outlying and edge expansion and infilling expansion. The study also highlights the heterogeneity of ADA's urbanization effects in the three mega-urban agglomerations. Therefore, this research can assist decision-makers in formulating differentiated urban planning and land use policies for regional urban-rural integration and sustainable development.

Land use institutions and social-ecological systems: A spatial analysis of local landscape changes in Poland

Aaron Deslatte et al.

Summary: Understanding the impacts of human settlement patterns is crucial for policy decisions and ecosystem preservation. However, existing research often overlooks institutional diversity across countries. This study examines landscape change in Poland to investigate the relationship between land-use intensity and socio-economic and political variables. The analysis reveals that characteristics of land-use regulation influence landscape changes, and development is influenced by spatial and temporal factors as well as European Union investments.

Revisiting the 'southern mood'? Post-crisis Mediterranean urbanities between economic downturns and land-use change

Antonio Tomao et al.

Summary: This study examines the effect of economic downturns on urbanization and land-use change in the Athens metropolitan region by analyzing expansion and recession waves in two time intervals. The results indicate a difference in land-use change between the two time periods, with an increase in industrial settlements and conversion of forest patches to urban use during the recession. The study highlights how economic downturns have influenced land-use changes, making them dependent on the local socioeconomic context.
