Decoupling analysis and rebound effect between China's urban innovation capability and resource consumption

Fei Fan et al.

Summary: This paper explores the spatial and temporal pattern evolution of the decoupling relationship between innovation capability and resource consumption in 283 cities in China using the improved Tapio decoupling model and geographic information system spatial analysis technology. The study finds that innovation capability and resource consumption in Chinese cities exhibit a weak decoupling state. Regions with significant decoupling show a trend of spatial agglomeration, and the positive impact of population growth and innovation intensity on resource consumption outweighs the inhibitory effect of resource efficiency improvement.

The direct and lag effects of administrative division adjustment on urban expansion patterns in Chinese mega-urban agglomerations

Rundong Feng et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively evaluates the mechanism and effects of administrative division adjustment (ADA) on the urban expansion patterns of three mega-urban agglomerations in China. The results show that ADA has a significant impact on urban expansion, with different effects on outlying and edge expansion and infilling expansion. The study also highlights the heterogeneity of ADA's urbanization effects in the three mega-urban agglomerations. Therefore, this research can assist decision-makers in formulating differentiated urban planning and land use policies for regional urban-rural integration and sustainable development.

Model of monthly electricity consumption of healthcare buildings based on climatological variables using PCA and linear regression

Ernesto Perez-Montalvo et al.

Summary: Due to the global pandemic, public administrations are aiming to optimize resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Energy Regional Entity of the Junta de Castilla y Leon in Spain is specifically focused on optimizing energy consumption in healthcare sector buildings. Through the analysis of historical data and climatic variables, they have developed a model that shows how the availability of climatic variables improves the accuracy of electricity consumption estimations.

Impact of Urban Form on CO2 Emissions under Different Socioeconomic Factors: Evidence from 132 Small and Medium-Sized Cities in China

Ran Guo et al.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between urban form and CO2 emissions in small and medium-sized cities in the Yangtze River Delta in China. It considers the influence of socioeconomic factors such as industrial structure, population density, and economic development level. The results show that these socioeconomic factors have a significant impact on the relationship between urban form and per capita CO2 emissions. Compactness has a positive effect on CO2 emissions, increasing with the proportion of the tertiary industry, population density, and GDP per capita. Complexity only has an effect on CO2 emissions with an increase in population density. These findings can guide decision-makers in formulating plans for CO2 emission control.

Did Polycentric and Compact Structure Reduce Carbon Emissions? A Spatial Panel Data Analysis of 286 Chinese Cities from 2002 to 2019

Kai Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the relationship between urban spatial structure and carbon emissions in China and finds that more dispersed and less monocentric cities are generally associated with lower carbon emissions. However, for cities with stronger economic development, a more polycentric spatial structure may result in higher carbon emissions. Additionally, a city's urban spatial structure can have positive spatial spillovers on the carbon emissions of neighboring cities.

Towards carbon neutrality and China's 14th Five-Year Plan: Clean energy transition, sustainable urban development, and investment priorities

Cameron Hepburn et al.

Summary: China's 14th Five-Year Plan presents a real opportunity to align long-term climate goals with social and economic development plans, calling for increased ambition in climate policy. Key focus areas include energy transition, sustainable urban development, and investment priorities. China's role in shaping the future of the world's climate is crucial, and peaking emissions by 2025 will have significant benefits for both China and the world.

Polycentricity and the role of government-led development: Employment decentralization and concentration in the Seoul metropolitan area, 2000-2015

Kyusang Kwon

Summary: The study found that government-led development and planning play a crucial role in transforming the Seoul metropolitan area (SMA) into a polycentric urban structure. Strong inter-jurisdictional competition and the interplay between market forces and government-led development are considered key factors in the formation and growth of employment centers in the SMA.
