Wood-based textile fibre market as part of the global forest-based bioeconomy

A. Maarit I. Kallio

Summary: Wood-based cellulose fibres for textiles, hygiene and health products have been growing rapidly in demand, with a significant increase in production already seen. The market is currently being met through conversions of paper pulp mills and investments in new mills, but investors need to consider the risk of rising input prices due to increasing roundwood harvests and wood prices.

Estimating supply and demand elasticities of dissolving pulp, lignocellulose-based chemical derivatives and textile fibres in an emerging forest-based bioeconomy

Franziska Schier et al.

Summary: In this study, the market behavior of emerging forest products based on lignocellulose and their response to main economic drivers were investigated. The global market elasticities for dissolving pulp, cellulose-based chemical derivatives, and textile fibers were computed. Structural changes in the data were observed from 1992 to 2015, leading to the division of the timeline into three sub-periods for elasticity estimation. The price elasticities of dissolving pulp showed significant fluctuations over time, while the elasticities of cellulose-based derivatives and textile fibers did not exhibit a clear trend towards more elastic or inelastic coefficients.

Advanced and versatile lignin-derived biodegradable composite film materials toward a sustainable world

Han-Min Wang et al.

Summary: The excessive use of petroleum-based non-biodegradable plastic products has led to severe environmental pollution and ecological problems, prompting the development of biodegradable and renewable alternative materials. Lignin, a plentiful aromatic polymer with excellent biodegradability and biocompatibility, has shown great potential for creating diverse functional and sustainable materials to replace plastics. Recent advancements in the preparation and utilization of lignin-derived biodegradable film materials have garnered significant attention for their applications in sensors, energy storage systems, packaging, and biomedical materials.

Boosting the EU forest-based bioeconomy: Market, climate, and employment impacts

Ragnar Jonsson et al.

Summary: This study examines the climate change mitigation implications of wood substitution, with a focus on modelling forest resource and wood-product markets. The results suggest that increasing wood-based construction in the EU can boost production and employment, but may also lead to reduced carbon sinks in forests due to increased EU harvests. International cooperation is needed to address these challenges.
